Social media has come a long way since it was first introduced to the world of technology. Where would society stand without social media today? In Isabel H. Evans’ article “Head in the (Instagrammed) Clouds”, she states a common international problem: the overuse of social media. Evans indicates that online sites are a distraction and are taking over daily routine. She argues that although she uses Twitter and Facebook herself, sites like those are a waste of time.…

On one hand it has the power to educate and empower swaths of population with productivity tools and knowledge, while it also has the power to draw us into isolation, unable to live without grabbing that screen and sending a text message. We should not put an all-out ban on technology, but instead simply limit how much time people spend on it for non-educational purposes. According to Document 5, technology is capable of these amazing things, yet most of us use it for pointless things, such as snapchats and text messages. The solution to this problem is to limit our “screen time”, while reclassifying “screen time” as anything that is non-educational. Limit the number of hours spent watching TV and posting on Instagram, while encouraging the use of tech for education and information, with things like Google Docs, Wikipedia, and others.…

Daniel T. Willingham brings up very convincing arguments to how smartphones have little to no effect on our intelligence in The New York Times article “Smartphones Don’t Make Us Dumb”. Reading the article I agree with his points and believe it can give insight to people who believe smartphones are entirely bad for our brains. I agree with Daniel because based on my personal experience with owning a smartphone I find his points to be true. Unlike other kids who have had a smartphone since they were in middle school, a trend that is becoming more and more commonplace, I received my smartphone the summer before senior year of high school. Having acquired a smartphone much later than most kids I have a good idea of how my thought processes worked…

“The average person spends 97 minutes a day texting, 118 minutes searching the Internet, 41 minutes on Facebook, 49 minutes e-mailing, and 51 minutes talking on their cell phone” (Junco & Cotton 2012). The accessibility to information and communication justifies the amount of time people are spending on their phones to a certain extent. Individuals with regular cell phones do not have an easy access to Internet and social media; the statistics involving smart phones are more relevant to this topic. Sixty-eight percent of adults own a smartphone (Mediaiti). Although cell phones have made aspects of life much easier, they have become an accepted addiction with severe side effects.…

However, they are a source of distraction when performing an important task.
