The possible answer is that animals are close to humans in the sense that they are living and have eyes and noses and skin, but people and animals have different reactions when it comes to chemicals. In “5 Ways Animal Testing Hurts Humans” Dr. Doctor Aysha Akhtar, M.D., M.P.H says “…there is more than 90 percent chance that the drug that tested safe and effective in animals will be ineffective or unsafe in you.” This is because animals -while having very similar DNA to humans- is still off by a few points that make a huge difference. This logic also works vice versa, where tests may have failed on an animal, they will not continue on, but just because it didn’t work for animals doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have worked on humans. Because of this, animals have been put through trials of pain for no reason while ingredients could be completely safe for humans if used in a responsible way, i.e.: not ingesting …show more content…
Consumers can buy from many big-name brands like Kat Von D, Jefree Star, and e.l.f. that do not test on animals. They can do this because the cosmetic industry has a large foundation of ingredients safe for human use from the tests conducted in previous years or simply because the company is vegan. This is can also be avoided by other companies that do test on animals because there are alternative methods. One method can be human conducted tests that would theoretically work better than animal tests. For example, people volunteer to test medications, and while there are risks, there are wavers to sign proving consent, the results are the most accurate to the targeted human consumers. This would be the same set up for testing the safety of cosmetics and it wouldn’t involve animals. However, there are other harm free solutions. For example, there is a new development of 3-D skin printing. The concept would be created “from incubated skin cells donated by surgery patients” (Business of Fashion). The skin would be from human cells and would be able to respond the same way to a cosmetic as if connected to a human. Another method would be in vitro, or in glass, treatment. In vitro is where human cells are tested with a chemical, such as hair dyes would be tested on hair follicle cells, to find a result without harm coming to a person or
