Approximately 1.6 billion accidents are caused each year by drivers who are texting while driving. Texting behind the wheel is developing into one of America’s top killers, even when being compared to cancer or drunk driving. Nearly 25% of all accidents are caused by texting and driving. Drivers are getting more reckless when it comes to taking their attention off of the road to look at their cell phones. Even though the death rates from texting and driving are steadily increasing, they can be lowered monumentally or even ceased completely with the correct implications not only from law enforcements but also all capable drivers, car manufacturers, and cellphone providers.

According to Fcc.Gov, “There are no national bans on texting or using a wireless phone while driving, but a number of states have passed laws banning texting or wireless phones.” The judicial system should start moving towards banning all use of phones behind the wheel or towards make texting and driving tickets more expensive. Rising the prices of texting and driving tickets will force drivers to leave their attention on the road so they will not be faced with a costly fine. Also, if a driver is pulled over for texting while driving the law enforcement officer should have the opportunity of contacting the cellphone provider and temporarily post-poning the cell phone plan, meaning the service on phone of the driver will be temporarily turned off. This in return will make your phone useless for a set amount of days depending on the violation the driver has committed. This will create a decision of whether or not losing your phone service is worth the risk. The judicial system can also pass a law where a driver who gets into an accident from being distracted by their cellphone in anyway should be held reliable to pay for all the accident fees instead of their insurances paying for the damage. By requiring driver’s to pay for the accidents instead of relying on their insurance companies to pay for the damage, not only the death rates will lower but also the accident rate caused …show more content…
People are losing loved ones daily of all ages due to something that can easily wait. As a driver let the person trying to contact you know that you’re driving, or make the person wait, or just put your phone in an unreachable place and wait until you safely reach your destination before looking at your device. Not only should requirements should be set, but also people should be made aware of the risk they are putting themselves in when they take their eyes off the road. Drivers, car manufacturers, and even cellphone providers can work towards lowering the rates of this growing epidemic and work towards stopping texting and driving all together
