Do people ever think about the negative consequences of something that our society looks up to? Everyone only sees the good in things and bypasses the bad because others are telling them what they need to be doing. Therefore, when the result ends up being the opposite of what someone thinks it is going to be, a big deal is made. Many people, both males and females, see running as being very beneficial to their health. However, if one looks deeper into all the effects of running, there are some major setbacks that it may cause. Weil, the chance of getting an injury while running is at a much greater risk than getting one from any other aerobic activities. All coaches and athletes, and other citizens may not realize how much damage this may cause to the body. They still choose this form of conditioning because it helps to get their body in shape and prepared for what they are working towards. The reason that there is a greater chance of injury while running is because of the shock to all the joints that it causes. Common sense that all physically active people should know, for any type of exercise, is that if they have any pain in their joints, they need to stop the exercise or cut down until he or she pinpoints the reason of the pain. “Of course, this caution applies to any form of physical activity, but because running subjects the body to so much trauma, it is of special importance here” (Weil). Although running does affect many muscles and joints in the body, the legs, knees, back, and kidneys are what contain the most stress. Personally, I have had a few different experiences that had to do with injuries from running. During the summer between my eighth grade and freshman year, I had a lot of back trouble. My lower back would go out of place every time I attempted to run during basketball camps. These injuries were caused because there is so much force applied to the foot when it contacts the ground. The pressure is not the only thing that causes injuries, but also from insufficient warm-up and fatigue on the muscles.
