Wallace explains how lobsters are boiled alive for our pleasure “each lobster is supposed to be alive when you put it in the kettle.” (p.56). He also talks about how the lobster senses that his “end” is near “The lobster will sometimes try to cling to the container’s sides or even to hook it’s claws over the kettle’s rim like a person trying to keep from going over the edge of a roof… Even if you cover the kettle and turn away, you can usually hear the cover rattling and clanking as the lobster tries to push it off.” (p.62). I think Wallace shows us EXACTLY why we shouldn’t eat other animals. Why eat another living being knowing you will cause him suffering? Why are they always slaughtered in an inhumane way? We can answer these two questions with one simple concept: Anthropocentrism, Humans over everything else. We can also consider the fact that lobster is an ugly sea animal, is that still a valid reason to kill it and eat it? Jonathan Safran Foer in chapter 2 of his book Eating Animals said “But why wouldn 't I eat a dog I 'd never met ? Or more to the point, what justification might I have for sparing dogs but eating other animals ?” (p.24). He’s basically saying people are so opposed to eating dogs because they are emotionally attached to them and it is considered as taboo, however they have no problem consuming other animals without even thinking. Can we in this case blame cultures for allowing the consumption of some animals and the care for others? Humans are also animals, and yet we do not consume their meat because it is wrong. So why would it be right to consume non-human meat? Non-human animals
