4.4 Needs of self-actualization To explore whether older adults’ self-actualization is realized through studying in the UA, I interviewed teachers about what they have done to support students’ actions and students about their voluntary and other ways to actualize themselves. Through data analysis, I notice that after attending the UA older adults are more likely to take voluntary works than before, and the UA is making efforts to encourage social participation.

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

    7. What barriers may there be to implementing the activities suggested in 4 and 6 and how could you encourage the person to take up these recommendations? There are many barriers which elderly may need to overcome to partake in health promoting activities. Some of these barriers include, lack of time, poor health and not knowing anyone in the group (Biedenweg, Meischke, Bohl, Hammerback, Williams, Poe, & Phelan, 2014, p. 5). Researching nontraditional students allowed me to capture the thoughts and feelings of these students in regards to involvement outside of the classroom. This research will give the campus an opportunity to reach out to this student population when planning events and take into consideration some of the challenges faced by non-traditional students. Student organizations on campus can also learn how to increase participation and membership in the organization from the non-traditional student. The overall goal is to give the nontraditional students a voice and allow administrators the opportunity to further support this student group.…

The 75th anniversary of the ageds 450 farm is a celebration of the past 75 historic years of the farm. This celebration should bring back memories of both good and perhaps some bad memories of things that the farm experienced. Some of objectives and purpose of the 75th anniversary of the farm includes providing a place where past students of the ageds 450 class can look back and reflect on all the memories they experienced while they were at Iowa State University. Another objective of the anniversary is to try to find a solution to help promote the idea of having sponsors donate money for the new classroom and shop that we would like to be built in the near future. This is an important task and will require attention to detail when trying to have some of the donor’s ears perk up when we are discussing the plans of the new construction north of the current shop.…

The aftermath of hurricane Sandy was horrific, however it was also followed by a huge amount of social responsible acts that influenced my life indefinitely. In October of 2012 my community was directly hit by hurricane Sandy which resulted in extreme flooding, fires and wind damage that left a tremendous amount of damage, including concrete sidewalks and streets in rubble; there were holes with half or entire truck’s or car’s buried inside of them. The flood was so bad that we were trapped inside until the water eventually drained into the sewer systems. When the storm and the water surpassed, people panicked; with no phone services, television or radio no one knew how long we would be without resources. Many people broke into flooded stores to get water, canned foods and any undamaged supplies…

As mid-lifers confront mortality, they realize their potential for growth. The actualization process has previously been seen as a very individualistic goal, but, there is no reason that is has to be. Everingham (2003), believes that people can share their moral content in an inconclusive way and make their goals communal rather than strictly personal. Acting as a team rather than just as one person, can add a whole new horizon to self-actualization. We are not what we are supposed to be we are what we make ourselves.…
