Loisel did not feel guilty at all when she spent her husband's saved up money that he worked hard for, just to buy a dress. She had to think about how much money she could ask for before she asked because she is very greedy and will take as much as she can get. “She danced madly, wildly, drunk with pleasure, giving no thought to anything in the triumph of her beauty”. Mme. Loisel took all she could get since she knew how beautiful she was, and was happy to dance with many men. Mme. Loisel was jealous of her friend because she was rich. She spent most of her time day-dreaming about being wealthy and having everything she wanted. Seeing all of her friends expensive jewels “her pulse beat fast with longing” and Mme. She liked the way she felt with the necklace on and she wanted to live a rich lifestyle so badly so she could own all of the nice things that her friend had to lend her. Because Mme. Loisel is so greedy and selfish, she had to have a jewel for the party. When she lost that jewel, she decided to lie to her friend and ended up working harder than she ever did to pay back money she spent buying her friend the new diamond necklace. Finally Mme. Loisel realized how much she should have appreciated what she had when she looked so old her friend did not recognize her, and told her the diamonds were not even

Moreover, she has no regard for what her husband may be giving up in order to be able to purchase the dress. Monsieur Loisel places her happiness above his own and does not tell her of his sacrificed shooting trip (Maupassant 27) His generosity and kindness only further highlight how selfish Madame Loisel really is. After the Loisels leave the swank party to which they have been invited, the narrator comments that She danced madly, ecstatically, drunk with pleasure, with no thought for anything, in the triumph of her beauty, in the pride of her success, in a cloud of happiness made up of this universal homage and admiration, of the desires she had aroused, of the completeness of a victory so dear to her feminine heart. Here the theme of pride is very openly emphasized, and the other italicized words also imply Madame Loisel’s self-centeredness – her desire to feel superior to others precisely because she has so often in the past felt inferior. Finally, pride prevents Madame Loisel from confessing the loss of the necklace, and indeed pride in a sense even prevents her from considering that the necklace might not be as valuable as she assumes it is. On the whole, the story is a splendid illustration of the ironies that sometimes result in life when we achieve the very objects of our…
