Mathilde was not a very happy person and she had just gotten to experience the type of life and attention that she had wanted. She had viewed her husband in a bad way and did not seem to believe that the two of them made a good marriage. Instead, she believed that she belonged in the fancy dresses and expensive jewels. She compared herself to a higher standard than even those that she looked up to could afford. I believe that once she had a taste for that type of party and lifestyle she would have eventually left her husband for someone of higher status or became very depressed and ill due to her shame of not being able to live up to that status with a husband who she did not see as being able to provide that for her.
