Self-esteem is defined as “a person 's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self.” As a people we seem to lack the ability to love ourselves completely. We seem to always judge our lives according to what others have and we forget to appreciate the things we do obtain. This problem is very prominent in low income areas.Throughout the world, there are many people who struggle with self- esteem and because of this many people are very despondent with their lives and self. It is important to exhibit to people how to appreciate the value of the things they do posses as shown in “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. This would occur because once you feel good about yourself, you are less affected by those around you who appear better off. You began to realize that life about way more than materialistic things.For those who may have developed depression, meeting with a therapist would be beneficial. It allows patients to have an outlet to express themselves without being judged. It also in some cases helps discover the root cause of why a person is so unhappy with their lives. The last thing a person can do to love themselves is to think about the things in life you do have instead of focusing on what those around you posses. Although we may think we have nothing, you may have something that someone else wants. We have to remember that everyone in life has something they don’t like about their lives. It is important to tackle problems early before they began to affect you to the point where depression can develop . The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant is not just any story, but a story that teaches us to love the things we cannot change. This story relates to one of the biggest problems that many adolescents face at some point in their lives and the dilemma that low income families also deal with. One must remember that they are beautiful and that although they are not rich, they are still valued
