Introduction/Background
-What is the nature of the product or technology?

The nature of 3d printing is nearly any area you can think of applying it to.

-What is its development history?
Rapid prototyping came about in the late 1980s and early 1990s. ‘Rapid prototyping ‘paved the road for all the 3d printing companies out today. (Rapid prototyping created prototypes for a manufacturer to create a prototype of a product with plastics before executing their plans and mass producing them from their required material.)
The original advance in 3d printing technology started with MIT(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and through 3d systems, a huge innovator in the 3d printing world. Charles Hull first created his Stereolithography apparatus(SLA) machine in 1983, and then 3 years later, in 1986, went on to patent his creation, and co-found 3d Systems with that success. On the other hand, Carl Deckard was working on his own RP(Rapid prototype) machine, which he termed Selective Laser Sintering(SLS).

When you or someone can recreate your idea into a 3d image called a CAD (Computer-aided Design) file. From the CAD file, it’s converted to a STL (Standard Tessellation Language) file. Then it’s transferred over to a 3d printer, which can print your idea in many different ways depending on what type of 3d printer is being used. There is a very diverse selection for types of additive manufacturing. Several different materials you can print with exist too, and more materials are getting the road paved for them to be printed as well. Currently, there is a vast amount of supplies that people tinker with, but there are also a few key materials used in 3d printing today that I’ll focus on. The most popular, plastics, come in a few different options. Some of them are stronger than others, some even

Three dimensional printing is by far the most high-tech thing that scientist have created, but did you know that silver played a part in making it all happen? Three dimensional printing ink is made out of silver nanoparticles, generating a higher demand for silver. Silverware is big user of silver as well. Along with gold and diamonds, silver is a big player in the jewelry business. Silver is also used in pottery glaze, helicopter bearings, cutting boards, oxide and zinc batteries, swimming pool purification, washing/drying machines, toothbrushes, and tens of thousands…

Invented in the 1980's by a research team led by Professor ReymondClavel. The first idea was to use parallelograms to build a parallel robot with 4 degrees of freedom. Parallelograms were used because they allow an output part to remain fixed at a certain orientation with respect to an input. ReymondClavel did not know about the parallel mechanism that Willard L. Pollard patented in 1942.…

You can 3d print anything with materials that go from glucose (sugar) to ceramic (thersa.org). Say that you want a dog collar and you go online to buy one or of course go to any pet store to get one, but that is going to take days to ship and process. Instead you should go online and get a template to 3d print a collar for your dog. For obvious reasons you get to choose the color and you can even engrave the collar with the animals name (thersa.org). It could improve or not improve human life because eventually you may never leave your home because all you have to do is 3d print whatever you…

Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object” (3D Print). The process starts by creating a virtual design of the object. The virtual design is made using a 3D modeling program in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file. Another way the process can start is by using a 3D scanner which makes a 3D digital copy of an object. 3D printing is being used to make individual objects, tailoring to a need rather than replacing the assembly line, therefore, it is revolutionizing the health care side of the…

Have you ever wondered how technology works or if is even good or bad for the people that use it or even for our society? Technology can have its good sides which are helping people communicate much faster and find solutions much faster than they have before but it can also have its bad sides like affecting the way that people communicate now, which is less than people use to talk before. Gina Tsuge argues that technology can be good or bad depending on whose hands it is on and the way that technology can be used by people. It can either affect people if it is not used the way it should be used, or it can benefit people or impact humanity in a positive way if it is used in a good and effective way.…

The Printrbot 1404 is capable of printing both Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polylactic Acid (PLA) plastics on a heated printed bed. The Printrbot extruder is able to move on the x, y, and z axis, while its print bed is limited to x axis movements. The Voxel8 is also capable of printing both ABS and PLA plastics with the addition of a conductive silver material. The Voxel8 also includes a heated print bed.…

In the research article, “3D Printing and Wood,” Rupert Wimmer, Professor at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, explains that 3D printing could be an alternative for “materials such as wood.” (par. 1) Customization is something that has always been important to people, but is especially important to the modern-day society; everyone always wants to have a one-of-a-kind product in order to standout of the crowd. When compared to 3D printing, the cost 3D printing “stays constant” (par. 3) while the cost of traditional manufacturing slowly rises as “complexity or customization rises.” (par. 4)…
