A) The nature of the primary school
Ilam School is a primary school located at 66 Ilam Road Christchurch, neighboring The University of Canterbury. This school accommodates approximately 500 students ranging from years 1-6(“Welcome to Ilam School”, 2015). Ilam School is of decile 6, which has fallen from last years reading of 7(Ministry of Education, 2015). Ilam School is a fantastic educational facility that offers extra curricular activities not always possible in a primary school setting. Sometimes people teach without intending to do so. Once a fully qualified and registered teacher you must follow the guidelines of the Code of Ethics. Upon the Code of Ethics (2004) it says, “Teachers registered to practice in New Zealand are committed to the attainment of the highest standards of professional service in the promotion of learning by those they teach, mindful of the learner’s ability, cultural background, gender, age or stage of development”. The Code of Ethics is separated into four sectors. They are of the following; Commitment to learners which involves “develop and maintain professional relationships with learners based upon the best interests of those learners, promote the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing of learners and encourage learners to think critically about significant social issues” Code of Ethics (2004). This therefore overall meaning having a passion for the children you teach to successfully achieve goals across all fields stated above. Commitment to parents/guardian and family/whanau. Having a stable and open relationship with the student’s parents/guardian and family/whanau allows you as a teacher to be able to discuss any issues or successes that may arise throughout their child’s life. By knowing the children’s family it also helps you understand the child’s background and what may help them succeed within the classroom. Commitment to society is shown through you as the teacher publicly getting yourself out into the community and actively helping out around the place. This then allows the wider community to see how you are outside of the schooling environment and make those relationships with he students and family a lot stronger.
