Students will analyze the nature of matter and its classification. The firearm itself and the ammunition were created with the help of chemistry. From the chemical makeup of the firearm and ammunition, to the reaction that occurs when the gun is fired, chemistry is present. The reason of this standard is to explain the nature of the materials that create firearms. The frame and barrel of firearms are made out of stainless steel. This is because of steel’s properties. Steel’s physical properties are that it has Higher strength and hardness yet very lightweight, and it’s highly ductile. Its chemical properties are corrosion resistant, and cryogenic toughness. The gunpowder is made up of a mixture of 75% saltpeter(Potassium nitrate,KNO3) finely ground, 15% charcoal, and 10% sulfur. KNO3 is noncombustible unless it is in large quantities in fire. It acts as a catalyst because it accelerates the burning of the combustible materials. Charcoal is mostly made of Carbon, which is combustible in the presence of oxygen. It is also made from slow burned wood that turns to ash. It then creates CO2. Sulfur is extremely flammable in open air, giving off Sulfur Dioxide(SO2). So, Sulfur is extremely flammable…
