He pushes himself forward through his fears and doubts even when he is trembling and feels like a small hobbit (878). As Sam puts on the Ring, he begins to understand the power of the Ring as the Ring tries to penetrate its own shadow (878). He feels the Ring gnawing at his will and reason tempting him with wild fantasies that are filled with his desires (880). Sam overcomes the power of the Ring as he penetrates through the Rings ability to deceive the wearer and follows the light within him to guide him out of the shadows (881). As Sam stands on the edge of a knife wavering with the desire to take the Ring for himself, the love for Frodo conquers the power of the Ring and he comes into the knowledge that he is just one small hobbit who desires none of the glory of a hero, but one who wishes only for a small hobbit hole of his own with a small garden (881). As Sam finds Frodo he takes on the role of protector, never allowing the whip of the Orc to touch Frodo’s skin because he is under the protection of Sam (889). Frodo being locked in the attic represents what the power of evil is doing to him confining him not only physically, but mentally breaking him down into submission as he lies naked and curled up on the floor (889). Darkness begins to clouds Frodo’s mind as he loses all hope no longer being able to see the light as Sauron’s veil dims all memory of even the Shire (897). Sam’s will rises above as acceptance of the quest and the knowledge within him instills that “the shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach” (901). When Frodo is no longer able to focus on anything but the task of bearing the One Ring he hands over the Lady’s glass and gives Sam Sting acknowledging his role as protector (905). Sam becomes ever more aware of the effect the ring possesses over Frodo as he becomes “half-bowed, often stumbling, as if his eyes no longer saw the way before his feet” (914). As they near Mount Doom, Frodo begins to prepare himself and unveils his true form in front of the abyss that stands before him removing the the Orc-shield and flinging aside his helmet (916). They go through this process of letting everything go and taking only that which is needed coming into their purest forms going full circle into the journey’s end (917).
