The case studies are to understand the natural lived experience between incarcerated parents and the exposure and lived experience of the children whose parents are incarcerated. According to Harris, Graham, & Carpenter (2010), there are 2.7 million children in the United States that have parents who are incarcerated. Many caregivers tell children that their parents may be attending college out of town or assisting other family members. What some children are told can cause more confusion than if they were told the truth about the parents location.
In order to prevent adverse outcomes with these children, the social capital theory would be utilized. The results can also be effective in identifying the children’s needs, from their perspective and using their ideas to better serve their needs and assist them with adjusting to their parent’s incarceration and improve the effects of the incarceration on their overall well-being. This study can be instrumental in supporting organizations that provide support to the incarcerated children and the parent’s advocates by utilizing the results to address current mandatory sentencing laws, mentoring programs, care giver support, employment and educational opportunities. Overall, the results can improve the human and social conditions by increasing awareness and understanding that will help build on policy change, which can address mass incarceration and improve positive social change.
