The Occupation of Alcatraz took place from 1969 to 1971 and it was a major rights movement for the NAtive American People because they were trying to get a place for their people to have a cultural center. The oppression of people’s rights and lies have been problems the Native Americans have had to continually deal with from the U.S government. While the island of Alcatraz is an important historical icon in U.S history, The Occupation of Alcatraz is a very important moment in the Red Power movement because the Native Americans used it to help them get a historical place for their people, the Native Americans withstood the obstacles the occupation presented them with and it was the first majorly successful movement …show more content…
The people of IAT “occupied Alcatraz for the next 19 months”(Native American Activism). Even though the occupation of alcatraz was not successful for what they intended it to be, it made a lot of people aware of the situation of the NAtive Americans. The occupation was backed by many non Native Americans, even celebrities, until it ended. The occupation failed in the end but it led to more movements that made the Red Power even more known. A long quote from an article explains that “the amount of support that they were able to draw, and the impression they made on the American public had a huge effect on their later efforts, like the Longest Walk, from San Francisco to Washington D.C. Additionally, following the occupation, in the years between 1970-1972, 52 legislative proposals had been passed on behalf of American Indians to support tribal self-rule.”(Home Page). The author of this quote suggests that even though the occupation itself didn’t help the Native Americans at the moment, it led to the Native Americans getting more rights and it helped lead to more movements and protests that helped the Native American Rights Movement.
