The National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics states that an engineer will hold the safety, health, and welfare of the public as above all else in their practice. According to this statement, an engineer will have to use sound judgment during his/her work to make sure that the effects of the decision are both ethically good and safe for the public. Virtues or character traits that make a person succeed in their purpose blend into engineering since all of the decisions that we as engineers have to make need to be for the better good of the public. At Texas A&M University, one of the primary objectives is providing an environment that promotes these values of character as these traits are what make an Aggie who they are and how they represent the school in the world. Respect, Integrity, and Leadership are three of the most core values that this university holds as a standard, which also happens to be some of the most sought after qualities in a potential employee. As a school with a long tradition of respect and honor, plenty of opportunities present themselves to experience the medium that develops character. An example of this is shown in Muster. Muster is a time where Aggies gather together in a common place and mourn those Aggies, both current, and former students, who have died in the past year. This time is one full of respect for the individual and honor of the life that the person lived. Another example is shown in Fish Camp, where students who have attended A&M for at least a year hold a camp to teach the traditions that are expected of the incoming students to follow. A significant portion of the instruction at this camp is embodied in the work ethic put into an Aggie when first arriving, as there is an Honor Code that every student is supposed to have on their work stating “that Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do.” This is instilling virtues of character by repeated action of a trait, gaining more understanding after each

At Texas A&M, undergraduates and graduates wanting to get a higher education go by the Aggie Code of Honor, “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steel or tolerate those who do.” (Texas A&M). This quote is one thing Aggies follow and hold very dearly and close them. As I almost complete my undergraduate degree at Texas A&M I understand the Aggie honor code more and more each day as to what it means to me. To me the Aggie honor code is important because it allows me to be proud of a college campus that not only provides a higher education, but a university that provides great communication and network between all students and also be respected all around the world by the great Aggie Network and that till this day and in the future will always be…

In this essay I will agree with Hursthouse 's statement. I will discuss virtue ethics as a valuable moral theory and explore the influence of Aristotle. I will highlight some issues with virtue ethics, provide some possible responses, discuss the other two leading theories in normative ethics (Deontology and Consequentialism) and then finally compare all three theories together. According the Hursthouse "A virtuous agent is one who acts virtuously, that is, one who has and exercises the virtues... A virtue is a character trait a human being needs for Eudaimonia" Virtue ethics is a moral theory that endorses the importance of an agent 's character and their virtuous attributes.…

Aristotle’s basic view of ethics is that people do everything that they can for the sake of happiness and that the human virtues are those of the soul, not the body. His theory on virtues explores how morality, which is closely connected to our functions or purpose as human beings, involves obtaining good character traits, which create virtuous individuals. Aristotle’s virtue theory claims that activities have values and specify that it is required for humans to assign a specific character trait to activities depending on the differences of the activities to create a predetermined value. A virtue is a habit or an acquired human quality of character that allows humans to achieve personal happiness while vices are the opposite and ruin an individual 's chances and goals of achieving personal happiness. While the main motive of consideration for the utilitarian is the consequence of direct actions, the people are the primary object of consideration in the virtue theory. .…
