Michelle Arreola Political Science 110 Course #70219 Question C Saving Lives from Gun Violence Gifford’s Courage to Fight Gun Violence is known as an organization that fights gun violence epidemics. Formerly known as Americans for Responsible Solutions, the organization rapidly became the leading growing movement to save lives from gun violence (“The Courage to Fight Gun Violence.”) Gabrielle Gifford’s, former Arizona congresswoman and her husband astronaut Mark Kelly co-founded the Gifford’s organization due to a tragedy experienced by Mrs. Gifford. On January 8, 2011, Gabrielle was shot in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona while meeting with her constituents (Memmott 2013).…
Proof of this can be found in the writings of the “Father of the Constitution,” James Madison. In Federalist Paper #46 Madison talks about the militia which would outnumber the standing army by at least 10 to one being able to oppose the army in defense of their liberty and freedoms. Coincidently, this clearly makes the case for the militia bearing equal armament to the nations standing army, and who is the militia? Simply put, according to United States Code, Title 10 section 311, the militia is comprised of all United States citizens over the age of 17 and who are able to bear arms. Now, on to the National Rifle Association; yes, they are a political lobbying group, however first and foremost, the NRA is a training organization, teaching firearms safety and competent marksmanship ever since its founding in 1871 by two retired Union Army Officers.…
The Second Amendment gives the citizens of the United States the right to bear arm. Considering the enormity of this right, a heated debate has ensued on whether this right should be restricted. However, in the interest of public safety this right afforded by the bill of rights should be tightly regulated. This viewpoint has been developed through trial and error, after several mass shootings and high murder rates with a fire arms the United States is rendered no option but to restrict the Second Amendment to preserve the safety of the public.…
The ATF knows the role that firearms play in violent crimes and pursues a combined regulatory and enforcement strategy. Investigative priorities focus on armed violent offenders, career criminals, narcotics traffickers, violent gangs, and domestic and international arms traffickers. Sections 924(c) and (e) of Title 18 of the United States Code provide mandatory and enhanced sentencing guidelines for armed career criminals and narcotics traffickers as well as other dangerous armed criminals. To curb the illegal use of firearms and enforce the Federal firearms laws, the ATF issues firearms licenses and conducts firearms licensee qualification and compliance inspections.…
Because of the debates between the two parties, the law is delayed indefinitely. Then owing to the intervention of the National Rifle Association, the gun control becomes more difficult. The origins of the NRA could trace back to the American Civil War. There are eight American presidents who are members of this system in the history.…
The organization actively fights legislature that would enact gun control laws. Gun control laws are used to protect people and not to infringe on their rights. The way the National Rifle Association fights legislator seems like they want anyone and everyone to have a gun. The NRA is right when stating that guns are a constitutional right, but they are wrong in saying who should get them. Giving someone a gun that was deemed mentally unstable should not be given a gun.…
Founded in 1975 by former Senator H.L. Richardson, the Gun Owners of America (GOA) is a lobbying organization to preserve and protect the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which gives gun owners the rights to possess and bear arms. This think tank views the ownership of firearms as a freedom issue, for gun control laws are infringing on the Second Amendment right. The GOA believes that gun control laws have taken away some of the treasured gun rights of the American people and its members want them back. For this reason, the organization prides itself on being “the only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington,” as stated by Ron Paul (R-TX), a former congressman.…
From watching the frontline documentary and reading the book, I think that interest groups have too much influence in American politics. Interest groups are seen to be everywhere in the nation and I believe that by them creating a great deal of controversy helps to create a division between the government and its people. Interest groups first objective is not political influence but simple survival, which helps to shape a group’s political activity. The issue that I see constantly arising is that the American government is more responsive to special interest rather than public interest. This often results in the public being disappointed with the way the political system is set up and making individuals feel as though they’re at a loss.…
This group was founded in 1871 and started the firearm-related bills since 1934. They have organized rifle clubs in many states, as well as the National guard organizations sough NRA advice to improve members ' marksmanship. Because of their obsession with gun control, the NRA greatly affiliated with the Republican Party. The AMA has promoted scientific advancement, improved public health, and invested in the doctor and patient relationship.…
The Firearms act of 1934 greatly restricted the purchase of automatic weapons, rifles, and shotguns (Cottrol 67). The people of the United States felt a sense of relief when an initial precedent was set for the Second Amendment. This was one of the first acts restricting the purchase of weapons, this was seen as the first action taken by the government to begin a trend of gun control (Cottrol 67). Gun control means political efforts to regulate the manufacture, sale, possession, and use of various types of firearms (“Gun Control”). When the government took action and in a way initially supported the side of viewing the amendment as a collective right it took the disagreement between the two sides to a new level.…
The NRA is recognized as “the premier firearms education organization in the world” (home.nra.org), “as a major political force” (home.nra.org), and “as America’s foremost defender of Second Amendment rights” (home.nra.org). Gun owners are naturally drawn to the NRA by its years of success, education, and service. All of the people who support and belong to the NRA are voters that the Republican Party can also gain support of. By continuing to appeal to those who are affiliated with the NRA in some way, the Republican Party can gain more members and voters, and keep the members and voters that we…
They are referred to as gun rights activists. The most prominent gun rights advocacy group is the National Rifle Association (NRA). The National Rifle Association promotes the “right-to-carry” laws, which means people have the right to carry a concealed handgun in public. Mark Gius is an economist at Quinnipiac University who found that limiting people’s right to carry increases a state’s homicide rate by 10 percent (Rosen). There are many who call for stricter gun control measures and laws.…
Gun Control has been a fiery topic to debate over the years between political parties(“From My Cold”). Because of the mass shootings,School shooting, and assassination over the years. Democrats believe there should be more regulations on guns while on the other hand,Republicans believe the should be less because it infringes on the Second Amendment rights. Gun Control is one of the most controversial topics in today's society due to how it violates the Second Amendment, infringes on citizens’ right to protect themselves, and it is a direct invasion of privacy. Gun Control laws violates our Second Amendment's right to bear arms.…
In the past few decades, firearms have had a big impact on society. These impacts have been both good and evil, and have caused controversy on the topic of gun ownership. Some groups, such as the Brady Campaign, would like to see gun control laws take away some rights and restrict others, whereas the National Rifle Association would like to protect gun rights and educate society on the use of firearms. Both sides want to stop the problem of gun violence, but protecting gun rights is the only way to truly insure public safety. Gun control will not be able to stop the use of guns, and it will put citizens in an unfair situation where they cannot protect themselves.…
The culture and laws of a country are heavily influenced by its history. The United States of America was born out of violence. On July 4th 1776, a group of well-respected Americans signed The Declaration of Independence, officially announcing America’s separation from Great Brittan and initiating the Revolutionary War. Once America emerged as victors of the war in 1783, in order to protect the civil rights of American citizens, laws were created by members of legislature. Today, one of the most controversial laws can be found under the second amendment of the Bill of Rights.…
