Professional athletics has been an important part of the American culture for quite a long time. Sports are what separates this nation from any other nation in the world. Given the viewership, I would like to focus on the National Football League. The National Football League is a multi-billion dollar business that is projected to reach $13 Billion in 2016 (Forbes). Keeping that statistic in mind, the athletes are paid a substantial amount due to the success of the National Football League. As a result, the general population believes that professional athletes, football players, are grossly overpaid. The average salary in the National Football League is $1.9 million. Goffman discusses how individuals perform acts that are mainly used to establish and re-established interpersonal relationships with others. He then explained how there are two types of deference acts, avoidance rituals and presentational rituals. Avoidance rituals focuses on what should not be done and respects a recipient’s privacy during conversation. Straying away from situations that requires the recipient to speak on a subject matter that they would consider personal or inappropriate for the type of relationship they share with the individual. Presentational rituals focuses on what should be treated in interactions. This encompasses everything that should be brought up in conversation whether it be a causal greeting to conversation starters. Deference will help with my proposal because professional athletes are expected to act in a manner that highlights the idea of professionalism and keep positive relationships with others within the given profession. Zimmer discusses the income disparities between those athletes that are most popular and generate the most revenue for their team and the sports association. The author also examines the disparities between those players and the players who play small roles within their organizations and how that very well may be problematic.
M. Bhagat wrote the article, Do athletes get Paid too Much Money, which is a discussion that compares the salaries of professional athletes to professions outside of the athletic realm. This author provides the reader with the perspective of someone who does not completely understand the intricacies of the profession.
The Sun Chronicle is a newspaper that published the article, Are Pro Sports Athletes Overpaid, which is very similar to Bhagat’s article in its comparison of the salaries of professional athletes to the salaries of those who serve the community. This article explicitly states that salaries that high should be given to other professions who actually help in today’s society.
