Every teacher at the school is given a laptop to use for lesson planning, data tracking, and instruction. Every classroom except the Pre-K class has a Smartboard. Which is great, right? Well not really. We are lacking in the level of usage. Much of our use is to conduct very basic actions. Teachers type lesson plans in Word and post the plans to the school’s Sharepoint. Teachers create Powerpoint presentations to guide the flow of their instruction. These are the main uses of the laptop technology at the school. Given that there are many programs available, and that every teacher has a Smartboard, I think we can do better with our current technology and the ways in which we use it. The Smartboards have become nothing more than a projection screen. This is where I think the survey the principal gave teachers will have its greatest impact. Teachers can now become part of professional development sessions that will promote professional and educational growth through technology. If proper training is given, teachers would be able to utilize the technology in better ways that could enhance instruction and student success. Only then can we truly see the effectiveness and impact of the standards on our teaching practices and student’s academic achievements. Teachers will hopefully move from using technology as a more personal use to instructional uses. The only standard we currently meet is Standard 2, which states, “Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments: Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards•S.” (ISTE, 2012). Teachers present and assess students through the use of many digital platforms. Teachers also communicate with parents via a variety of digital age media
