The National Coalition for the Homeless suggests that there are more than 500,000 young people experiencing homelessness annually. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reports that annually at least 800,000 people in the United States experience a night of homelessness. For the unaccompanied, runaway, and homeless youth those numbers are accessed at 1.3 million annually.
While there is a discrepancy in the numbers, the fact that there are not enough youth shelters across the nation is a cause for great concern. According to the National Campaign for Youth Shelter, there are an estimated 4000 youth shelter beds nationwide. The strategy is one that entails targeting corporations, charitable and civic organizations. In addition, TCHYP will implement a media campaign to include local newspapers such as The Star Telegram, and the Dallas Morning News and PSAs (public service announcements). Because youth, adults, businesses, organizations, writers, podcasters, and bloggers access social media as a means of obtaining information, TCHYP will forge a social media campaign beginning with a Facebook page, an account on Twitter, SnapChat, The Vine, and TCHYP “popup ads” will be placed on internet sites, such as Google, Dogpound, and Yahoo so that when ‘homeless youth or runaways are searched, information about TCHYP programming, and a hotline number will populate. Participants caught using illegal drugs will be asked to leave the campus, and in most cases, be suspended for a period of time to be determined by the staff and supervisor(s). Situations that become physical are to be monitored. In the event of physical confrontations, those involved will be separated until such time as the issue can be resolved. Individuals that are a part of a physical confrontation, involving a staff member or not, will be suspended from the center.
If there is an incident that threatens anyone on the campus of the drop-in center that cannot be handled by staff, a supervisor must be contacted and 9-1-1 will be called. Drop-in center workers also wear clothing that will not make them standout and must have a visible I-D badge while representing TCHYP. Personal items are to be kept locked in an area that participants do not have access. Each center worker must institute the respectful and ethical rules established by TCHYP.
All TCHYP rules are to be followed by each employee and/or volunteer. Safety rules and precautions have been established for the protection of each and every person who enters TCHYP’s campus, or receives
