And it was then that I saw where the United States, a first world country, a country a country that is technologically and economically advanced , had many selfsame issues as does the poverty stricken nation of Haiti. I am specifically worried for the kids living in poverty in this nation as the number of children who are under 18 and are living in poverty was over 16.4 million in 2010 according to the National Poverty Center and this number is continuously growing at an ever present rate. It seems that most people do not truly understand the range and effects of poverty even in their own country and if they do, they have chosen to ignore it completely. We must address this matter and develop a sound plan and we cannot turn a blind eye, for if we do the situation will become untenable. I am not suggesting a redistribution of wealth to rectify this problem nor am I viewing this as simply another aid program for the poor. I hope once there to study poverty law which deals specifically with cases involving the rights of low income families to access government benefits. I believe that once I have my Juris Doctorate and have established myself within the legal community I will be able to help the less fortunate in the community on a Pro Bono basis. I would also plan to see if the NCCP could utilize my attorney skills at their nonprofit in order to draft legal documents that address the issues faced by low-income families and their children to be sent to congress. I hope to get more involved while in college in other poverty centered organizations such as the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP). As well, between my studying and schoolwork at the University of South Florida, to be able to volunteer some of my free time to those who are in desperate need and to increase student involvement in this
