In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” written by James Hurst, ilistrates the theme that one must cherish what the have, before they lose it forever . To open with, in the begining of the story, the narriator, now with a little brother with a whole list of disabilitys, is ashamed of being related, and made plans to, “kill him by smothering him with a pillow,”. But when examining him through the bars of a bed frame,his little brother looked directly at him and smiled, showing the narriator that he is ,”all there in the head,”and decided to let him live. This shows the theme by describing the main character’s hatred towards his new little brother, and how quickly his oppinion was swayed when he relized that his brother was mentaly sound.
