The Narrator Monologue

Improved Essays
In the first exploration, we explored the opening monologue of the Narrator and the very first scene. This first scene is important as it can be linked to the idea of omnipresence and control of play. In this case, the control is over how social class affects the main characters. This can also relate to Greeks’ idea of Fates who decide the fate of humans for their own pleasure. The Narrator is always there and it is as if he is amused by the actions of Mickey and Edward. During this, we explored two portrayals of the Narrator: either sinister or sympathetic and detached. Overall, we believed the sinister option was better as it added to the link to the Greek Fates and how these Fates control social class – as if it were to be an experiment into how class affects mental and physical states.
One medium we employed was the use of gesture. When playing the Narrator, I would use body language that was open but controlled – on “of one womb born”, gently place my hand near Mrs Johnstone’s stomach; and on “As like each other as two new pins”, approach Eddie with both hands raised as I were to have a pin in each hand. With these gestures, the Narrator acts more direct and insulting – as if he were a Fate who is controlling the scene and knows that he is the one who decides the characters’ fates and seem more threatening.

I employed constant eye contact with Linda and would use more of a flirtatious voice (low pitch, slow pace and some random pauses) and closed the proxemics to heighten the sense of flirtation between Eddie and Linda. With this interpretation, this can link to ending of Blood Brothers and how Mickey questions Eddie about his child. Mickey would know about Linda and Eddie’s betrayal and the obvious anger and hatred towards them would be revealed. This also demonstrates more of a divide between the brothers and how the social class divides the opportunities people experience and the effects on those in those

In Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, many soliloquies and monologues are spoken in order give important depth and details about the characters and the upcoming plot. In 1.5, a young man goes to deliver a very important message from the Duke Orsino, to a young woman Olivia, professing his undying love. Unbeknownst to the Duke, this young man Cesario is actually a woman dressing up as a man. He goes along living life depicting a man; portraying himself as very youthful, as an explanation for his feminine features . With the Duke’s message in mind, Cesario parleys the confession to the unimpressed Olivia and sets off on his way; only to be stopped by a “churlish messenger,” who proclaims that he has forgotten a ring (2.2.22).…

Drama ISU Reflection From picking a monologue to leaving the stage after my performance, the monologue ISU of this class has been one of my favourite projects that I have ever done. I felt most successful with the character sketch and with my final rehearsal of my monologue. The character sketch, which I did receive full marks on, was one of the parts I felt most successful with because I was able to create a full character from a couple pages of one scene from an entire person’s life. I felt it was successful because of how I was able to develop a real character with a personality, a future and a past based off a few lines that she said in the scenes. I felt successful with the rehearsal because tt matched the vision I originally had almost perfectly.…
