The Narrator Is Insane

The Telltale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is a story about a man who murders a man due to the appearance of his eyes. The narrator commits the murder and does not believe he is mad but all of his doing is alright. “True! --nervous --very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute” (Poe 2). The narrator’s first lines within the short story are about how he is not insane just nervous. He speaks about his ‘disease’ which later on would be his superstition about the eye. Richard Weizel reports that it has been said that the shooting could have been prevented if Lanza’s mental state was looked into more. “The extent of Newtown school shooter Adam Lanza's growing rage, isolation and delusions when he was a teenager were apparently overlooked by his mother, psychiatrists and counselors, according to a report expected to be issued next month” (Weizel 1). Lanza like the Narrator had reports of isolation, rage and delusions. They both exhibited similar symptoms and in the case of 2013 Sand Hook shooting could have been prevented. Scott Jackson a chairman for the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission states Adam Lanza did not have to commit this crim. Jackson like Zimmerman both claim that these men had mental disorders that if were caught on early on would have not committed these horrible crimes. "Violent tragedies like this one might be prevented in the future by properly diagnosing individuals and getting them the treatment they need," Jackson said (Weizel 1).
