The N Word Essay

Right names depend on right connections, a reality so fundamental to human discourse that without it, human dialect might well collapse. But as with so much of what we take as human, we appear to be in need of an African-American exemption. The n word is like a prized possession of the black community. If it gets into the wrong hands, it will be destroyed and used wrongfully. When I hear this word come out of the mouths of whites, my face immediately lights up. It triggers a sharp pain in my heart that just doesn’t seem to go away. I was in middle school when I first heard the n word with an “a”. When it was used it always towards a black male so I figured it means boy or man and then eventually started using it towards but still never really knew what it meant. I got home that same …show more content…
Although this word originated with “er” at the end to degrade African Americans during slavery times by the whites, we have come to modify the word with an “a” at the end and use it as slang or a means of communication between one another. This was developed in the African American community therefore we basically have the right to call the word ours and if another race uses the word it would be disrespectful. You can’t just go throwing the word around like it’s a sack of potatoes. I just don’t understand why other races, specifically the white community, find it so hard that they don’t have the right to use the word. We have come up with this n word to fit into society with our own language and now others want to use it, which is so ironic. For decades, blacks have been struggling to fit into the same careers with others or getting treated fairly in the criminal justice system but when we say you can’t use the n word, you feel offended and we’re once again seen as bad guys? This whole world is corrupt and full of nonsense and blacks will never be able to live in a world where they feel comfortable and equally

I feel like it's remaining venom for the past; we shouldn't keep bringing it up. There are the worst to be used in order to express emotions to one another, whether if it's in casual conversations or professional conversations – we all should learn other vocabulary terms to address one another that isn't offensive in order to banish the N-word completely. 2b. Furthermore, through this lost sensitivity of the N-word is that we're managing to redirect the interpretation of this word from unpleasant to a common and even uplifting term . But even so, others continue to believe the N-word still has little to no difference in it definition and shouldn’t be used due to its shameful history, this counterargument is nothing more than an attempt to elude at the problematic issues in Latinos of an underlying misidentification or rejection of their identity as Cepeda suggests “Many folks in our parents’ generation have rejected their blackness [...] but those generations more informed by hip-hop are embracing their Afro-Latino identity and evolving past our own self hatred” (141). That being the case, this doesn’t grant just anyone with the right of dropping the N-word casually and believing that a confrontation will never arise at some point-in-time due to this, because of course that would be naive in repercussion. Lastly, there must be knowledge and understanding if ever using the N-word and shouldn’t just be used in a ‘caricaturist quality’ or faddish manner’ but instead to teach and understand vital Latino roots that have been lost and are now being admonished through the…

There have been instances when completely benign words in the English language have been deemed derogatory. The most apparent is the use of the word “niggardly”; which means to be stingy especially in reference to money. Yet, when people use the word they are immediately surrounded by people who think that they should not use the word. It is ridiculous that people think that a perfectly innocent word should be avoided. One of the most noticeable occurrences of this was in 1999 in Washington, DC.…

Mark Twain uses this word hundreds of times in his book to reference Jim and many other African-American characters. Many African-American school children have felt hurt and offended while reading this book. These feelings led to the parents of these kids storming into courts and superintendent's offices to have this book banned from the curriculum. Parents thought this would help protect their children, however, it actually negatively impacts their kids educationally by limiting their understanding and significance of the historical meaning of the word, and the possible ramifications of ignoring this word. From the beginning of the book, Twain had a plan when using the word “nigger”.…

Although the way racism is expressed has wavered over the years, it is still a major issue that plagues today’s society. Racism has been present in the world for hundreds of years, its levels of extremity subtly fluctuating. Recently there have been many outbreaks of racist acts across the country. For example, Bill Maher, host of HBO’s Real Talk with Bill Maher, made an extremely racist comment on his show, remarking snidely, “I’m a house n*****”. Famous rapper, Ice Cube, took initiative and called Maher out on his racism.…

I have to disagree with you and the author; I do not think that the “N-word” is the all American trump card. Yes, it is highly offensive, and yes can be extremely insulting, but I do not think it carries the title as most offensive thing you can say. I think that at one point in time it carried so much negative weight that it was the worst type of insult but I do not think it is that way anymore. The majority of the time that I have heard people say the N-word, it has not been in an insulting way.…

The term was also used to refer to the African Americans as half humans, hence representing the negative traits of being lazy, unintelligent and dishonest (Rehman, 2015). The group using a slur or profane word towards another group intends to offend them and keep them in the lower status. The connotation of the nigger term remains up to this present day even though such racial slurs have been abolished in a currently democratic country; the United States of America. The African Americans have adopted a similar form of the word "nigga" for use among themselves to portray survival and affiliation to the group of black race. They dared not to use the original term Nigger as they would…
