The N-Word: Discrimination And Abuse Of African Americans

Improved Essays
The N-Word isn't just a word. There is no end to the history and meaning behind the word. The word is and was used to degrade and abuse African-American/ Black people. They were degraded, abused, tortured and killed while being called the awful N-word. They were viewed as white men and woman's property, obviously these views differ from now, but the hate behind non-black people using the word hasn't. Black people didn't get basic human right—they were treated worse than most animals. White people and non-black people of color who use this word mostly say it because they believe it is 'trendy or cool'.

Black people have the right to use the N-word due to their past and the comfort and trust they find in each other while using it. Several

They do it to specifically hurt. I know several white people who use the word to be trendy. They use it during road rage and while talking about people they find annoying. They don't realize or pay attention to the pain it causes.

Even if you are friends with or in a relationship with a black person you cannot say the N-word. Even if they give you 'permission', they don't speak for all black people. Most of the time they just feel pressured to let you use it. Some black people don't even feel comfortable using it themselves.

The N-word should never be used in a derogatory way. Ergo, white people can't use it, because it causes pain and is harmful- even if not purposeful. I have several black friends and cousins who don't even feel comfortable using it.

You may be thinking it's messed up or racist for only letting one group/ race do something, which, by definition, it is. But this same group/race of people are hated and beat on in the past and present. A few news articles show black people being abused with and by this word. One of the articles is summarized here, A black male football player with a learning disability was called racial slurs (The N-Word) and forced to recite a racist poem while holding the confederate flag. He was also raped by the three white men forcing him to do this with a hanger. The coach of the football team had even encouraged the three boys to do this to the black player. This

Furthermore, through this lost sensitivity of the N-word is that we're managing to redirect the interpretation of this word from unpleasant to a common and even uplifting term . But even so, others continue to believe the N-word still has little to no difference in it definition and shouldn’t be used due to its shameful history, this counterargument is nothing more than an attempt to elude at the problematic issues in Latinos of an underlying misidentification or rejection of their identity as Cepeda suggests “Many folks in our parents’ generation have rejected their blackness [...] but those generations more informed by hip-hop are embracing their Afro-Latino identity and evolving past our own self hatred” (141). That being the case, this doesn’t grant just anyone with the right of dropping the N-word casually and believing that a confrontation will never arise at some point-in-time due to this, because of course that would be naive in repercussion. Lastly, there must be knowledge and understanding if ever using the N-word and shouldn’t just be used in a ‘caricaturist quality’ or faddish manner’ but instead to teach and understand vital Latino roots that have been lost and are now being admonished through the…

Mark Twain uses this word hundreds of times in his book to reference Jim and many other African-American characters. Many African-American school children have felt hurt and offended while reading this book. These feelings led to the parents of these kids storming into courts and superintendent's offices to have this book banned from the curriculum. Parents thought this would help protect their children, however, it actually negatively impacts their kids educationally by limiting their understanding and significance of the historical meaning of the word, and the possible ramifications of ignoring this word. From the beginning of the book, Twain had a plan when using the word “nigger”.…

The term, “nigger”, is a unique and a degrading insult. This word haunted and belittled generations of African Americans. With its use of blatant racial terms and constant presence of racism, the classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Nelle Harper Lee, has recently sparked controversy. The reason behind this controversy is that people tend to feel uncomfortable when reading it. People who disapprove of the book also believe in banning the book from school curriculum. I believe, because of the books ability to teach lessons on racism and open minds to deeper discussions in the classroom, To Kill A Mockingbird should remain on school curriculum.…
