Hercules is a heroic Greek tale from their mythology. This legend has sparked many variations of adaptions, the most recent popular media it is in being film. Hercules - 1997; Hercules - 2014; and The legend of Hercules - 2014, are three film adaptations I have chosen to analyse their faithfulness to the true mythology. The results are not surprising however, as they are just cinematic adaptations, rather then documentaries.
Disney’s Hercules was made in 1997 and is a animated adaption directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It is the most inaccurate of all of the movies. In this is ‘The origin story of the the mythical Greek hero. Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom.’ The first issue with the movie, is the fact that Hercules is said to have had a love affair with his half-brothers wife. Though he did have a half brother, there was never an affair, and furthermore he was never sold into slavery. This is where a large issue arises. ‘Hercules and his friend are taken captive and sold as slaves. Our hero eventually ends up in a makeshift arena in Sicily as a gladiator.’ Battling as gladiators is a part of Roman culture. One of the most fun inaccuracies however, is the lighting-whip sword that somehow seems to be invented in 500 B.C. Hercules traditional weapon of choice is actually a club. One of the things that is true, besides the parental situation, is that he fought a lion. However, this is quickly an accuracy changes as Hercules step brother, Iphicles, takes the lion pelt that Hercules strangled to death. ‘Hercules trapped the lion in its cave and strangled it. For the rest of his life, he wore the animal’s pelt as a cloak.’. The Legend of Hercules has many inaccuracies. It uses the actual mythology as a framework for a 300-meets-Greece story ark.
