Angel Cinetros: Latino Identity and Political Attitudes The second presentation on ethnic identity was very interesting. It was stated that Latinos possess many Republican traits. They are socially conservative, middle of the road, and ideologically religious. The presentation went on describing how race and ethnicity are the same thing but tend to only matter politically, like on the census.…

In my essay, I will be elaborating stereotypes of the book mindwise by Nicholas Epley and the article The Myth of Latin Woman . This two stories talks about how the author sees stereotype in their life or point of view. Stereotype Stereotypes is one of the biggest problems in the world for people because they get categorized based on gender, religion , race, education, and more things that’s how the author Nicholas Epley see it in his story and as well in my point of view. Some people get selected based on stereotype and it makes them feel different about themselves. In my personal experience stereotype is one of the main problem in my life because one time I was categorized on how short I was from others students that happen when I was in…
Andrea Escobar Final Draft 9/30/15 ANTH-202 Yingkun Topic: Mexican Americans in Chicago and how they struggle to keep their cultural alive so far away from the border. Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…
The books Maus I and Maus II are graphic biographical memoir of the life of Artie Spiegelman father Vladek Spiegelman, and his mother Anja Spiegelman. Artie, who authored the oral history memoir, is a child of the two Polish Jews who survived the mouse and cat game of historical genocide Holocaust, which was a systemic persecution and coordinated murder of millions of Jews and other targeted groups by Nazis regime (Maus II, 45). The father experience of Auschwitz is the other focus of the story (45). Spiegelman’ mother, Anja committed suicide in 1968, whereupon his father, Vladek Spiegelman burned Anja’ diaries. The author uses the work to uncover the view of the Holocaust and how such event changed individuals’ experiences and societal effects…
Persuasive Essay Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary study of differing race, ethnicity, and Nation, but also sexuality, gender, and other such markings and power, as expressed by the state, by civil society. When the schools in TUSD didn’t have the Ethnic Studies Classes they’re graduation rate for Hispanics was at 50 percent, but after they started having the Ethnic Studies Classes the graduation rates for the Hispanic students went all the way up to 93 percent, which was a very good improve that benefited a lot of people. The Ethnic Studies class also helped so many of the students that didn’t try at all and that they didn’t even care about school. The Ethnic Studies Class encourages students to get out…

The various guest speakers that shared their stories and life experiences with the class allowed for a deeper understanding of the concepts discussed, but also the provided a much greater significance overall. While the idea of oral tradition was analyzed through various readings as well as in lecture, hearing certain stories such as the reason behind Rosie giving her song to Edosdi, really helped me withhold a stronger connection with the idea. Growing up, I loved hearing stories about what people have gone through and experienced so by incorporating the stories of real people who dealt with residential schools like Murray and his wife kept me intrigued. Furthermore, I was also brought up with several stories from my parents and relatives so these presentations were very close to my heart. Guest speakers also provided a dissimilar perspective on the topics than what the professor or Stephanie had taught in tutorial.…
American History: Through the Eyes of the People and the Land The 21st century has arrived, and yet our fellow citizens continue to debate among the premises that we should take on a multicultural society. Though, there are those who believe multiculturalism seems to have muddled the U.S. into a moment of mistrust and agitation, it is important to remember that our country was built upon the stories of those whom we now call minorities. Accordingly, scholars, activists and historians have eagerly persuaded educators to include a more complete and precise history of American culture.…
In Chapter 4 of Mexicanos by Manuel G. Gonzales it talked about the American southwest of 1848-1900 in four different states: California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. In California, after the Mexican American War, the Spanish –speaking society worsen. On January 24, 1848 gold was discovered by James Wilson Marshall and an employed carpenter named John Augustus Sutter in Coloma. In 1848, miners forced their way into the Sierra foothills, after a year the small stream became a huge spreading into territories. Out of the miners, the most successful were the Latin Americans from South America and Northern Mexico.…
Typically, Mexican households hold a rule that being obedient and respectful is not an option. A child is not supposed to question how they are being raised. In a short story written by Helena Maria Viramontes, called “The Moths,” a granddaughter attempts to make sense of why she feels isolated from her family. The story features a Mexican family living in Los Angeles mainly focusing on a fourteen-year-old girl referred to as the granddaughter, her mother Ama, and Amas mother Abuelita, making up three generations that have all endured similar sufferings. Living with an abusive father who spends his time yelling at the granddaughter for not going to church builds up resentment towards her family.…
Another way of teaching that I found very interesting was how Anita Moultrie would teach her student of their own culture and she would tell them she loved them all and that she had faith in them. This could fulfill the student of hope and motivate them to try their best in school and pursue…
As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. When interviewing John Killingbeck, a twenty-year-old student at SIUe, I learned that he has background that surprised and interested me immediately. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…
During this past semester, I have improved my organizing skills, my topic selection skills, and my public speaking apprehension. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to participate in this class, as it has taught me valuable skills and helped me become a better critical communicator. As Albert Einstein once said, “Education is not the learning of…
