The Mysterious Hartley House
It was a blustery fall day in Dublin, Ireland. Margaux Roberts glanced out the rain-spotted window at the countryside. Even though her and her family had only spent one day in Ireland, Margaux already hated it there. She wished that she could have just stayed at home in Colorado where all her friends were. Margaux had never been a very outgoing person and she preferred to read books and listen to her music rather than go to parties and hang out with people. Making friends was very hard for her and she was concerned that she wouldn’t make any friends and that she would be all alone. She had been sitting in the moving van for hours sandwiched between her father, mother, and brother in the uncomfortable bench seat and

Finally, the van came to a stop in front of a giant stone building. It was a marvelous structure with two stone towers on each side of the house, two large pillars on either side of the door, and a shield painted with a family crest hanging above the entrance. What Margaux’s father had purchased could hardly be called a house as it had the size and character of a small castle. Margaux’s jaw dropped and she pulled out her ear buds staring at the marvelous structure in front of her that was to become her new home. She climbed past her mom and brother and pushed open the door so that she could take a better look at the place. There were ornate decorations on the two turrets and the door was made of stained oak with a golden lion’s head door knocker positioned in the middle. She smiled at the grand beauty of her new house and turned to see that the rest of her family had similar expressions on their faces. She looked at them and smiled knowing that this was going to be the most awesome house she was ever going

On her way, she grabbed a copy of West Australian newspaper, a leftover of cinnamon bun from last night and a freshly brewed cup of Long Black Arabica. The placidness of her home is unwieldy; the constant sound of the dead air seems remind her of pure elation of her little farmhouse in upper Swan Valley. These reminiscing values seem to ponder in her mind as she heads out of the driveway. It was a heinous drive from her house to the suburb.…

Chapter One Zaphkiel sat on the green grass that was beginning to turn yellow, contently watching the pink and orange sky. The trees around him stood still, but the air was stiller as if the whole world were frozen in time. As the sun sank behind the horizon, a cold wind broke the stillness. Red and orange leaves fluttered to life in the gust of wind. Some of them broke free from their branches to dance in the breeze.…

Being forced to abandon a safe haven can cause one to hopelessly cling to the memories created there. In Gerda Klein’s memoir, All But My Life, she and her family are forced to leave their house. In this excerpt, she wanders throughout her garden for one last time. She then starts to reminisce about all the memories created there and realizes that her life will never be the same again, she has truly lost the innocence that her childhood once possessed. Through the use of concrete diction and juxtaposing imagery, Klein establishes a nostalgic yet sorrowful tone to illustrate how one can cling to their past yet cannot avoid the inevitable future, which causes them to see the world around them in a new light.…

~Sticking to the Script~ I. Felicitous I let out a long sigh as I walked along the beach’s crowded boardwalk, alone. Johanna, my twenty-four year old sister, had pulled me here an hour earlier to have a fun night together (her words, not mine). I was honestly just as happy, if not more, to sit home and do absolutely nothing but lay across my bed eating pizza without any human interactions. I was going to save my social tolerance for her wedding in half a week, but I didn’t want to disappoint her. So I gave in to her request, only to be left a short time later.…

Chelsie Goodwin Paul’s Story Although I do not have a personal It-Gets-Better story, Paul went to my school. “Paul” was the type of kid who was full of life, laughter, and excitement; that was until he started getting bulling from classmates in middle school. Paul struggled to make friends in the transition from Elementary to Middle school, because of his difference in personality and the way he expressed himself. Since Paul had difficulty adapting to the new scenery and people, he became known as a loner.…

We sat on the hot metal of the bleachers outside of the baseball field. The rainy days of Spring were replaced with the sweltering heat of the Summer, and hearing the clink of a baseball hit a bat in the Summer had become a tradition for almost five years. My older brother Dakota had spent those years being bombarded by sweat, mud, and the encouragement of his family, friends, and coaches when the team needed to hit a ball or when he wanted to show off how much better he had gotten since the last season. We were all ready for the season to be over so that we could plan our almost yearly trip to Virginia to visit our Aunt, Uncle, and our almost overwhelming blue-eyed cousins, Liam and Carlile. When the baseball season had come to a happy--or sad--ending, we would plan the trip and be piling into the car within the next week or two, to go on the getaway…

A young woman had just arrived for her first day of school and begun to stroll down the sidewalk, but her easygoing expression had soon been stricken with fear. Had I not known better, I could have believed that I was witnessing a rock concert; however, nothing but rage and hatred derided from the crowd. As a sophomore myself, I did not much care for trying to wade through a crowd of that size and temperament. The night prior, nothing but gossip filled the air about “Why does it have to be his school that has to be first?” It wasn’t until years later that I could possibly understand the gravity of the situation before me, but at the time I simply saw her as another peer.…

In Jeannette Walls’ life, moving from place to place was no big deal. At least not until her family packed up and moved across the country to a little town called Welch. Jeannette often had to adjust to a new town and a new home, but not an entirely new environment. In her memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette recalls doing the “skedaddle” several times. The most adventurous “skedaddle” was moving from the deserts of Arizona to the Appalachian hollows of West Virginia.…

The outside of the castle with its gargoyles and being surrounded by dead tress made it look like it was owned by Dr. Frankenstein, but the interior looked like something out of an expensive catalogue. The old man bid me farewell, and I started walking away from his castle into an unknown forest overflowing with creatures I couldn't possibly understand. A slight breeze pushed through the forest causing the few remaining leaves that hung to the trees to plummet to the ground. My feet became buried in a grave of orange, red, and yellow leaves as I kept my gaze pinned to the map since I had no idea where I was going. The sounds of animals running through the bushes filled my ears I tried to pretend the sounds were coming from rabbits scurrying…
