One common type of personality assessment in the workplace is the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI). Based on the theories of psychologist Carl Jung, the MBTI has been available since 1943 (Shuit., 2003). In identifying the personality types, people are either extraverted or introverted; sensing or intuitive; thinking or feeling, and judging or perceiving (Jung Personality Test, 2015). Despite the use of this test for many years, there is large controversy based on its validity specifically in the areas of employment, the use of this test has been questioned as to how well it can predict certain behaviors in the workplace and how valid the results attained are. For example, discussion of pre-employment personality testing has been focused on the validity of its measurement of certain variables, but research has also addressed issues pertaining to the ability of applicants to fake their scores on such tests by increasing their scores on seemingly desirable characteristics and reducing their scores on undesirable ones (Dalen, Roberts, & Stanton., 2001). Complete validity of personality testing, especially in instances in the work place, is of paramount importance due to the fact that, in many cases, decisions such as hiring and promoting are made based largely upon the indicative scores individuals receive as a result of their answers to the assessments (Dalen, Roberts, & Stanton., 2001).
