Myers Briggs Personality Type

Understanding personalities in the workplace has never been more important to be successful. Taking the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) allows an individual a comprehensive look into their personality strengths and weaknesses. Results and explanations of the extraverted, sensing, thinking, judging (ESTJ) personality are explained. The test results were then researched in “Type Talk at Work: How the 16 Personality Types Determine Your Success on the Job.” to address communication issues an ESTJ my face. Also how important having different personality traits are to be successful.

Today success means delving into type watching to reveal strengths and weaknesses of ourselves and the people that surround us.

(Humanmetrics Inc., 2015) Having this strong of a preference is apparent in my life and I anticipated the percentage would be high. With the management positions I have held in my professional career, I quickly realized the personality type that earned me the position would double as my weakness.
Sensing
The second personality type determines how we gather information from the world around us. (Kroeger et al. 2002, p. 34) If your personality type is sensing, it "means that a person mainly believes information he or she receives directly from the external world." (Humanmetrics Inc. 2015) In all aspects of my life I prefer my information be direct and factual. I feel if I ask a specific question, I should get a specific answer. Professional it was hard to manage anyone who did not work in this capacity. Instead of understanding the intuitive type, I became frustrated with conversation and lost patience.

I can take all factual information from the external world, devise a structured plan in a rational manner, and lead my employees to success. I was able to do this for a brief time when I was a general manager. However, the more interactions I had with my employees, the bigger the struggle became. As Dr. Fisher (2015), states "we 're accountable to one another. It 's not just followers being accountable to the leader, it 's the leader being accountable to the followers." David Keirsey’s theory of temperament proves my point further by placing my preferences in a temperament labeled "SJ." He believes an SJ, "has a clear set of standards and beliefs. They expect the same of others, and have no patience or understanding of individuals who do not value these systems." (Consulting Psychologists Press Inc., 2015) Although this is a downside to my personality, I believe the SJ temperament to be "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, brave, clean and reverent" (Kroeger et al. 2002, p. 57) helps to balance any
