Warm greetings to those who have found this time capsule. Encased in this time capsule are ten handpicked and meticulously decided pieces of music that represent the musical culture of the classical era until the 21st Century. Brought to you by the decisions of a group of musical professionals are a pieces that will captivate you into the history of the western world. Before intricately contriving a list of musical pieces, my group and I brainstormed the process of fabricating the list. We wanted to thoroughly digest individual suggestions to guarantee the decision would impeccably satisfy the curiosity of future people. Suggestions of musical pieces were carefully chosen by taking into consideration the many attributions of each piece. One …show more content…
While elucidating each piece, I will go in chronological order. The first piece on the list is Fur Elise by Beethoven. Adding Beethoven to our list was essential because he was a significant influence on the culture, even in the 21st Century; *Mozart even stated that Beethoven would be a great composer in quotes, "Keep your eyes on him; someday he will give the world something to talk about." Can 't Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley is the second piece because Elvis was acknowledged as The King of Rock and Roll for an abundance of decades. The piece Can 't Help Falling in Love was chosen because it genuinely depicted the simplicity of love during the 1960s; *my mother influenced me to suggest the song to my group when she claimed that the definition of love was beginning to blur in the 21st Century. Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley, I Want to Hold Your Hand by The Beatles, Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson were included in the list due to how marvelously they could represent the style of music in the 1970s to the 1990s and the fact that these artists were surpassingly worshipped during their time. The next pieces are all part of the 21st Century, but represent different genres. For the heavy metal area of music my group and I chose Snuff by Slipknot. For pop music we chose Baby by Justin Bieber, Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Ray, and Hello by Adele. Baby expressed the upbeat style of 21st Century music while Hello expressed pop music that was slower and more meaningful while Young and Beautiful depicted an alternative type of pop music. Coming in as the tenth piece is Tonight Looks Good on You by Jason Aldean. This piece flawlessly portrays the style and ideas that built up modern country

Milton Babbitt has been both a controversial composer, as well as author. In his article, “Who Cares if You Listen?” , Babbitt is quite harsh on his thoughts of contemporary music and performance as a whole. Babbitt discusses why contemporary composers, who produce “serious” and “advanced” pieces, should stop allowing their music to become accessible to the public. Instead, Babbitt calls for a restriction on their compositions and performances.…

Despite it originally being seen as a necessity by some, the abstraction of the musical museum is shown, in some ways, to negatively impact the musical world. While a new culture surrounding the concert halls has emerged, having the audience crave serious art, new composers like Brahms struggle to find a style that can win over the audience and square up in quality to the greatest of previous composers, like Beethoven. Others like Cage state that music must change, and the museum does not aid in that process. There are valid arguments for and against the musical museum, but despite one’s views, the museum has made an effect in the culture of concert halls as well as on the composers.…

In Unit One of Kristine Forney, Andrew Dell’Antonio and Joseph Machlis’ book, The Enjoyment of Music, we discuss a ton of different things. In the beginning of unit one, the authors write about melody, rhythm and meter, harmony, and the organization of musical sounds. Near the end of the unit the authors begin to write about musical texture, music styles, and music functions. The last topic discussed in unit one is sacred music in the middle ages. This unit provides us with insight on the basics of music and gives us a brief history on music during the middle ages.…

Music has been invariably elucidated throughout history altering the definition of what is considered melodic, and revolutionizing the manner in which pieces are composed and one of the most prominent periods of musical transformations was the 17th century. It was during these influential times in which music was subjected to the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, both signifying turbulent times for the church and both fundamental in the salvation of polyphonic musical composition as we know it today. Composer John Jenkins’s Fantasia is a prime example of a piece born on the scrupulous limitations of this era. Fantasia No. 13 is a piece scored for chordophones, most particularly a string quartet with double bass, the arrangement…

“Good luck out there. Should you need to vomit, please do so away from the piano,” quipped the competition organizer. Out of all the days I could have woken up feverish and dizzy, it just had to be March 27, 2011, the day of the piano competition. Playing the piano for an unwelcoming panel of stone-faced adjudicators when everything I saw seemed to spin round-and-round was the last thing I wanted to do.…

“Americana is contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw.” ( americanamusic.org) Aaron Copland was an American composer who instilled a great sense of nationalism in the American people through his many works of music that became known as the standard of the Americana music style. He, along with many other American composers of the early 20th century, wrote music that had distinct characteristics that gave Americans a sense of pride and gave music the “American sound”. His music single handedly created pride in the American people during a time that was considered by many one of the worst periods in our great nation’s history.…

Music is an important part any country’s culture. It exemplifies the mood and feelings of the people of that time and is a representation of their experiences. Before I begin this essay I would like to thank Dr. Glenn Brasher, a history professor here at the Capstone, for increasing my knowledge and allowing me to develop more perceptions about life. This acknowledgment to Dr. Brasher is very crucial; because it will help you understand how my inspiration has allowed me to persevere in life. Even though this year has just begun, 2017 has been one of the most eventful and unyielding years since I was in Kindergarten watching the Twin Towers collapse. In 2001, that event created a hole in our nation’s economy, enforced new policies that weren’t fair to all American citizens, and it even led to distrust in our county. As this year slowly unfolds it is revealing how those same affects are taking a…

Through the combination of this documentary, “The Great White Way” and “Showtime, I was exposed to information that made me question my definition of a musical. I was also forced to explore how the musical developed from its origins into what we know as the modern musical of today. My first discovery was that the musical is a distinctly “Americanized” art form and as such it is became a key part of American cultural movements that would follow the Revolutionary war. After gaining our independence as a country we moved to reject a great deal of our European culture and were then forced to create a new distinct American culture with its own art forms and practices. In order to determine how this process occurred specifically within live performance…
