A promoter has many functions and roles in which they must embody that enables them to complete the tasks which they are faced with. One of their most important jobs is to organise a show and negotiate with an agent to book an artist. They will usually try and secure an artist which they love so that they are able to work with someone who they enjoy listening to. Once the promoter has secured an artist, they must book and secure a venue for the show. They then have to act as an intermediary between the venue and the artist. This is important because every artist needs a venue to play at, and if they don 't have a promoter to link them to professional and popular venues available, they will struggle to get gigs for themselves. Another pro is that music publishers are professionals in the music industry, and so will be able to support and sustain you as one of their artists. Over many years of being in the music industry, publishing companies will have built up many connections and resources which will essentially become the artists assets. These connections will then speed up the rate at which an artist is introduced into the market through the publishers investment in their music. Moving onto the cons, current music publishers require their artists to pay all or part of the income in which that artist acquires from the sales of their music, depending on the agreements with them. This can sometimes be a hefty cash sum where the artist has to pay most or all of the money they are earning. Another con, is that sometimes the publishing companies insist that their artists give up control over their music in the market place. This can lead to the artist losing complete control and therefore sometimes not receiving the correct amount of money that they are entitled …show more content…
When someone becomes a manager for an artist, they immediately become connected to a professional network. This includes establishing a professional artist-promotor-manager relationship which becomes very important when trying to gain exposure for an artist. As usual, there are of course some cons that come with artist management. The manager usually has to pay for up to 15-20% of all the concert fees of their artist which includes phone calls and travel costs. This can become very expensive and mean that the manager ends up spending all of their income on the artist in hope that they will one day ‘make it.’ There is also a lot of responsibility put on the manager, to not make any mistakes regarding the artists career.
