In the pre-colonial Morocco, there was a distinctive Berber culture that was detached from the wider trends of the Islamic and Arabic culture as well as urban life according to colonial scholars and anthropologists (Crawford, p.21). However, after independence, nationalist scholars rejected this claim, denied any unique existence of Berbers, and blocked their inclusion in the homogeneous Arabic-Islamic country. This resulted in a conflict or issue that fueled the use of languages in this region as Berber activists continue to fight for basic human rights i.e. the liberty to speak their language in various places in the society such as schools and courtrooms.
