Eight years had passed and Susan had given birth eight children, three boys and five girls. Their names were Mary, Kate, Elizabeth, Abigail, Jacob, Duncan, and George. Sadly, Abigail, Duncan, and George had passed away due to sickness. Susan and Robert had just expanded the family farm. Susan wished Abigail, Duncan, and George were there to see it as she watched her remaining children play in the fields while Robert was hard at work harvesting corn.
As Robert and the kids came in for dinner, Susan noticed a worried look on Robert’s face. As they were eating corn stew, Susan asked Robert what was wrong.
He didn’t even look up from his plate when he said, “They raises the taxes.”
Up until now they had been pretty stable financially. However, now that the England is charging us taxes when they don’t even live here, they have struggled.
Susan replied, “The only reason we expanded, was to grow enough food to pay the taxes. What are we going to do.”
