Waitress Film Analysis

The movie “Waitress” uses comedy to address the issue of domestic violence that is seen commonly today. The images in the movie are portrayed in an unrealistic way, as most couples do not live in a perfect world together, they have issues as well. The situations in the film portray stereotypical thoughts that are typical in today 's society. For example, many people feel as if women have a role in society, as a caregiver, or "housewife". Jenna 's husband, Earl, felt this way about women, and made it clear to Jenna what her role would be. Earl felt abandoned when his daughter LuLu was born, causing him to be jealous of the attention Jenna gave her. Jenna had the courage to tell him she hadn 't loved him for years, in an aggressive manner. Earl was never …show more content…
Jenna 's good friend and colleague Dawn, is being sought after by a man named Oggie, who she has no interest in. He tells her that he will call her consistently, until she agrees to date him. Oggie calls Dawn multiple times, which pressures her to start dating him. These images encourage expectations for relationships that are unrealistic, especially domestic violent involved. Couples do not always work out, especially without effort from both partners. Even though Oggie is pressuring Dawn to date him, Dawn still finds time to help Jenna out. When Becky, and Dawn are helping Jenna move into Dawn 's house, Jenna goes and gets the envelope that Joe left to her. In the envelope is a sketch of her, as well as a check for $270,450, telling her to start fresh. This new bit of money helps Jenna to pay of her debt, and just as Joe stated, get a fresh start with Lulu. She ends up starting her own business which she names "Lulu 's Pies", here she serves brightly colored pies to her guests, and in the end you see Jenna walking away with Lulu. A seemingly perfect ending, to a sad tale of domestic

At 5:30 AM, the young, naive, Jenny Drpich is all dressed up finally ready to leave her home and head to her job for the first time. On her way, she grabbed a copy of West Australian newspaper, a leftover of cinnamon bun from last night and a freshly brewed cup of Long Black Arabica. The placidness of her home is unwieldy; the constant sound of the dead air seems remind her of pure elation of her little farmhouse in upper Swan Valley. These reminiscing values seem to ponder in her mind as she heads out of the driveway. It was a heinous drive from her house to the suburb.…

The Breakfast Club is one of my favorite movies of all times; as I was a junior in high school when this film was released in 1985. Detention was a common punishment; however, holding the detention sessions on Saturdays was controversial. Many individuals were angered by having to give up their time on the weekends. Therefore, the internal rebellion included not only students; but, parents and school facility as well. By the time my sister entered high school in 1988, Woodhaven High, no longer held Saturday detention sessions.…

In the ethnography, The Cocktail Waitress, by James Spradley and Brenda Mann the waitresses conform to many of the gender roles, stereotypes, and stratifications that their wider society puts on them. They rarely challenge these cultural norms and expectations because nobody wants to question tradition, they want to be considered good waitresses, and most of all the men at the bar inforce the social norms put on the women. The first reason why the waitresses conform to many of the gender roles, stereotypes, and stratifications that their society puts on them is because nobody wants to question tradition or the way things have always been. In the text it states, “No one at Brady’s thinks to suggest that a male could be hired to work as a cocktail…

His use of the term “pivots” (2) suggests that her movements are efficient and mechanical rather than natural, and that she spends no more time than is necessary at his table. As he repeats three times that she smiles at him, he conveys the sense that her smiles are automatic and part of her waitress persona rather than indicative of any genuine pleasure in his presence. He also mentions that she brings him a menu, brings bread in a basket and refills his wine glass, actions that she has no doubt repeated for countless customers. The routine leads him to liken her to “every waitress/who has ever served me,/and every waiter, too” (17-19). In these repetitive acts, she loses her individuality and becomes merely the type of server, whether male or female.…
