Piracy In The Film Industry

The movie theater experience is a national past time for most Americans. From early childhood to Senior ages many people can relate to the excitement and happiness that is theater night. This national past time is threatened with a new type of entertainment, movie piracy. Movie pirating has become prevalent around the world and continues to grow. Because of this growth the motion picture industry has to spend time and money trying to prevent theater piracy, illegal online movie streaming, and getting more attendance in theaters. Peoples cinematic experiences are threatened because of film theft and punishment for the theft should be severe. Studios are trying a few different strategies to slow the growth of internet theft. They are starting online services that make it easy to acquire their films over the internet legally. Much of the illegal online movie streaming sites are provided from other countries around the world. Making it difficult for authorities to close those web sites; however, they continue to close the sites down with time. People caught distributing illegal copies of films are charged with digital piracy and sued for loss of profits. Digital piracy is not only happening in America it is worldwide. In Erbil, Iraq, at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair a ninth-grade student by the name of Hadaia Azad Ezzulddin presented research she had conducted that uses infrared lights in movie theaters to degrade the quality of any movies recorded. According to the article “Fighting Theater Pirates” in Information Science & Technology Abstracts “Sure enough, she showed, a pirated movie included odd stripes or spots if it had been recorded while the LEDs were on”
