All Jews were forced to live in ghettos which many people were crammed into. People were always hungry. Some people had valuables that they could trade for food. Others had to beg or starve to death. Like in the movie, some children that were small enough would crawl through little openings in the wall that surrounded the ghetto and smuggle in food for their families and friends. If the children were caught, they would be severely punished. Maybe even beaten till death. Wladek Szpilman was indeed a very lucky person; his life was saved not once but twice. His life was first saved by a family friend who was a Jewish police officer in the ghetto the two were in 9 the Warsaw Ghetto). Another time he was saved by Captain Wilm Hosenfeld, a German officer, who gave him food and even the coat that went to his German uniform to help Szpilman stay warm in the harsh winter.
