Joseph Campbell, a mythologist, writer and lecturer, discovers common patterns of hero myths and stories that are told from around the world which are still relevant today. Campbell acknowledges the main steps to a mythic hero’s journey, such as the call to adventure, refusal of the call, crossing of the first threshold, and the belly of the whale. The film Divergent reveals these steps of a hero’s journey. Divergent is essentially about the government controlling society by dividing them into factions based on human virtues, such as Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, Candor and Dauntless. Beatrice Prior, who later changes her name to Tris, is the hero of this story and a part of the Abnegation faction. Their purpose in life is to be selfless and serve others. Throughout this film Tris feels out of place since she fits into three different types of factions based on her aptitude test; Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless, making her decision difficult. This film Divergent closely follows the steps of Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
The call to adventure is where the journey begins. The hero is taken out of their ordinary world and enter a new world filled with adventure. In other words, the hero is to be removed from their typical environment to quest upon a journey. In Campbell’s book, he explains that the call to adventure “reveals an unsuspected world, and the individual is drawn into a relationship with forces that are not rightly understood” (Campbell 51).The…
