It abundantly spotlights three maids’ lives in the south as black women during the 1960’s. Skeeter, the main character really focuses on the unjust treatment of the black population in Mississippi in particular. She has just returned as the only girl in her town to complete college, and she must navigate racism and limitations to find her identity. As she adjust back in to her old life she begins to realize that the life she grew up in was not the life she wants. All of her small minded friends have married and begun to have children. And she must find her own way. After her return she has one focus and that is to become a writer, and it is very unsupported by her friends and family.
