The films in today’s society leave nothing to the imagination. The viewers are given a visual of each character and can see their facial expressions throughout the movie. The down fall when watching a film is that the audience cannot hear the character’s thoughts. When they cannot read their thoughts on the page in front of them, it is hard to figure out their reasoning and personality. When a character in a movie runs into a burning building, the audience is left wondering why? If that same scene would be in a novel, the audience would have known that she was looking for her brother who has been staying in that building. Some believe that watching movies is better because the audience does not have to think. They can check out of reality for a while. They believe this is better because they do not have to put any effort into watching a movie. The audiences, who think that movies are better than books, want all the facts given to them. They do not enjoy suspense. They do not enjoy unknown plot twists. The movie watchers do not want to think during movies and want the images in the movies in front of them. These are usually the ones that do not have a strong imagination. Speaking of images, the individuals that enjoy movies over books enjoy the visuals and special effects that are shown in movies. It is argued in The Harvard Crimson, “As visual, rather than textual, [movies] display content much more quickly than can a book…Movies are more tangible, visual, and compact than comparable written works” (Drucker 2). Drucker is trying to explain the concept of visuals being more enjoyable than words. He claims that it is faster to get content to the audience through images than text. The audience might enjoy this because it takes less time and simply looks cool. Individuals are attracted to images and not words.
