The Cove Analysis

The Cove is a documentary which talks about slaughtering of dolphin in Taiji, Japan. Personally, after I discovered that there were indeed so many massacre of dolphin in a small cove, and recognising how cruel the killing was, I felt so upset as I did not notice such catastrophe before. There are several reasons for hunting practices mentioned in the movie. For example, the geographical location is perfect for the hunting as there are many coves in Taji, which are surrounded by highlands on three sides. Moreover, there is a quite long history for dolphin hunting to the Taiji people, which is part of their cultures. But most importantly, is the ambiguous attitude of the Japanese government toward the hunting problem.

But the meats of the whale, including the dolphin, are extremely poisonous due to a high level of mercury. Therefore, the whale meat should not be sold in the market. Yet, there are thousands of dolphins are killed every year in Taiji. Most of the whale meats that people buy in the Japanese markets actually come from dolphins. The most astonishing fact is that the Taiji mayors try to distribute the dolphin meats, with the non-profit purpose, for the Japanese school lunch. Since they school lunches are compulsory for students, they will actually eat the toxic dolphin meats, and it definitely harms their health. But government in Japan tries to hide everything behind, even via the media blackout. The documentary mentioned one example that impressed me, it was the mercury incident in Minamata, which also called the Minamata disease. Local people were affected because of the illegal waste dumping. But the government tried to cover those things up, as the polluter was the one of the advanced factories in Japan. Consequently, if the government brings all the stuffs on the stage, such as the toxic meats and cruelty, the whaling industry will bear the brunt …show more content…
So the standard of IWC has been criticizing for a long time, since they are protecting the large whales, while excluding the small dolphins, but actually dolphins are also whale. And why it is toothless is that it does not have the mandate to look at issues affecting dolphins. On the other hand, the documentary also stated that Japanese government was trying to manipulate the IWC. The research pointed out that in 2002, most of the Japan’s initiatives could not gain the support of majority (Miller & Dolšak). So the Japanese government recruit voting by giving developmental aids to the small bankrupt countries, which was mentioned in the documentary. The foreign aids serve as a diplomatic tool, the receivers will thus follow the interest of Japan, in order to make IWC more Japan-friendly (Miller & Dolšak). In short, the documentary reckoned that the IWC was not an effective, or even useless organization, to deal with the dolphin hunting problem.

I reckoned my self as an accomplice of the slaughter of dolphin. Because before I was impressed by this meaningful documentary, I thought dolphin were adorable, and their performances were absolutely fascinating. So when I went to the Ocean Park, the dolphin performance was the must-go place. But because all of us think that dolphins are cute, and paying money to watch the dolphins

The people don’t even know about it because of media cover-up, the government doesn’t want to let the people know that they are eating poison (“The Cove”). “Dolphin meat contains 2,000 ppm (parts per million) of mercury in it. The recommendation of total levels of mercury in seafood in Japan is 0.4 ppm,” Tetsuya Endo, Ph. D. at Health Sciences at the University of Hokkaido told us. It is very, very, very, highly toxic.…

It is the Japanese fishermen who take advantage of this weakness of dolphins to drive them to the cove where inhumane massacre occurs using harpoons. 6.2 MERCURY POISONING There is a concern of public health in Japan who can easily become innocent victims of mercury poisoning. As mentioned before, dolphin meat carries high levels of toxins such as mercury, methyl mercury and cadmium. Dolphin meat is not a popular category of meat in Japan. Another case is the meeting O’Barry had with the International Whaling Commission representative about the mercury levels in whale meat that it was cheap dolphin meat. The representative dismissed these accusations, although later the representative himself was tested positive for mercury poisoning due to consumption of dolphin meat. O’Barry went on to say, “here in Taiji you can go to the whale museum and watch a dolphin show and eat dolphin meat at the same time.” The irony is hard to consider across all situations, as the documentarian has made the Japanese look foolish. After examining the documentary, I was embarrassed for the Japanese, as they are more worried about the dolphin trade and the monetary income it brings than their own personal welfare that has involved poisoning themselves and their community with…

Shark finning is a process of removing the fins from a live Shark and casting the animal back into the ocean, leaving them to die several days later (Fairclough, Caty. "Shark Finning: Sharks Turned Prey"). The rest of the Shark is then left because Shark meat is of low economic value and takes up too much space for the fisher to take them back. In addition, Shark meat also contains urea, which turns to ammonia once the Shark has died and contaminates other fish. This is done so the fins can be sold on the black market, fins are sold for about $650 per kilogram (about 2.2 lbs) so they are in high demand ("Shark Truth."…

Placing these creatures in such small tanks can result in stress and aggression, so this could be a possible reason why the killer whale might have possibly killed the trainer. With this intention, captivity has negative impacts on these creatures. The reporters mentioned a quote from a marine consultant in Seattle, Washington named Fred Felleman which stated, “Keeping the social animals in what amounts to isolation is bound to cause problems;” Felleman was right about that and how captivity caused the killer whale to act out and attack the trainer. The reporters quoted from Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio, “What happened is…
