The movie Whiplash from 2014 follows the story of Andrew Neiman as he is a jazz major student at Shaffer Conservatory in New York City. The movie starts out with Andrew playing the drums in the music room, when Terence Fletcher, a well-known conductor, walks in to see him playing. Fletcher invites Andrew to be a part of his studio band as the alternative drummer. When Andrew arrives to band practice the next day, he realizes Fletcher’s true personality. He is insulting, abusive, and a bully to everyone. As the band practices the song “Whiplash,” Andrew has trouble staying on tempo. Fletcher stops and hurls a chair towards Andrew. He then continues to swear, yell, and denote Andrew in front of everyone. Andrew is later promoted to core drummer …show more content…
The bus gets a flat tire, so he rents a car, making him late. Then he realizes that he left his drumsticks at the car rental office. He drives as fast he could to get the drumsticks and get back before the concert starts. Yet, on his way back he gets hit by a semi-truck. Refusing to give up, Andrew crawls out of the car wreckage, and runs to the concert covered in blood. He walks on stage and begins to play, though due to the accident, he is unable to play. Fletcher goes over to him and tells him to leave. Andrew becomes angry and attacks Fletcher on stage, in front of everyone. Andrew is then expelled from Shaffer Conservatory. He then meets with a lawyer that represents the parents of the former student of Fletcher’s that passed away. The lawyer informs Andrew that Fletcher had lied, the student wasn’t killed in a car accident. He killed himself, due to anxiety and depression from having Fletcher as his teacher. The parents of that student want to make sure that Fletcher is never allowed to teach again. With the anonymous testify from Andrew, Fletcher is fired from Shaffer …show more content…
Andrew goes to the concert. Fletcher notices Andrew at the concert and goes to talk to him afterword. Fletcher discusses with Andrew that he pushes students so hard, because he wants them to become one of the greats. Fletcher asks if Andrew would play drums for his band at the Jazz Festival. Andrew agrees. Just before they were going to begin playing at the festival, Fletcher tells Andrew that he knew that Andrew testified against him. Fletcher then cues everyone to start playing. Everyone pulls out their sheet music, and starts to play, but this wasn’t a song that Andrew knew. Nor did he have sheet music for it. Embarrassed, Andrew walks off stage when the song ends. Then becoming infuriated, he walks back on stage and begins playing the next song without the cue from Fletcher. Once the song is over, he continues by playing an amazing drum solo.
