Pocahontas Argumentative Essay

History is the very important foundation that creates our present; therefore, it is very essential that it remains as accurate as possible. However, there are some cases in which the truths behind the history are stolen away, leaving only lies that people soon believe are true. This is the case with the 1995 Disney movie, Pocahontas. The very famous Disney movie, Pocahontas, shows lies about the life of Pocahontas that people soon believe as the truth. With using censorship in this movie, Disney builds a dramatized and flawed history of Pocahontas and illustrates a fake reality of who Pocahontas was. In the Disney movie, Pocahontas is a beautiful young adult with courage and interest in new things the world has to offer. Pocahontas soon meets a very attractive Englishman named John Smith. In the Disney movie, John Smith came to America in search of gold and new land. John Smith eventually develops an interest in fixing the “savages”, also known as the Indians. John Smith and Pocahontas meet when she follows him in the wilderness. They soon gain a connection and fall in love with each other. When they met in 1607, Pocahontas and John Smith were not both young adults the Disney movie portrayed them to be. Pocahontas was a young prepubescent girl of the age twelve and Smith was an older man of the age of twenty-eight. Pocahontas thought of Smith as nothing more than a family member. Pocahontas “signaled that he would be adopted, or remade, into his clan” (Allen “Pocahontas: Medicine Woman, Spy, Entrepreneur, Diplomat”).
