The low budget film Net Worth, is about a true story of the hockey players in the NHL, but more specifically the professional hockey team The Detroit Red Wings; and their struggle to protect their rights as workers against management and greedy, power-hungry owners of the NHL. The main character Lindsay tries to express to his teammates how important it is to form an organization to protect the rights of the athletes as workers. With a lot of motivation and struggle this action ultimately lead to the formation of the NHL Players Association.
By seeing the NHL as the workplace and the players as the workers, there were many work-related issues that the players had to face in the film. One of the largest issues shown in the film was the constant bullying and threatening by the managers and coaches, of the players jobs. If any of the players tired to stick up for themselves of question the coaches; like when Lindsay was trying to discuss his salary raise for example with Jack the manager, Jack tried to bully him into feeling guilty about wanting more …show more content…
They find out the money the owners are hiding and explain to the players that they should all be making more, as they are the bodies who are actually bringing in the money. They are the workers and the greedy owners are only making profit off of them.
Overall I think the movie NetWorth was a great film that showed the real struggles that happen between management and professional athletes. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys professional hockey and/or labour studies as both interrelate in the film nicely.
