It was accepted then because they didn’t think of African-Americans as equals to them. After Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery, especially in present day, if you are pro-slavery you are frowned upon by society. This is a huge change because in the slave days it was a natural thing for people that could afford slaves to have them. Most never saw it from the slave’s perspective. Now, slavery is illegal in the United States and against most people’s morals.
