Hop Frog And Divergent Analysis

Hop Frog/ Divergent Compare and Contrast You usually read books or watch movies in which people seek revenge, but show sympathy at the very last moment. What separates “Hop Frog” and Divergent from most stories is that the plot comes through with revenge and even goes beyond it. “Hop Frog” is a story about a character named Hop Frog who gets unwilling taken from his home and is sent as a gift to the king. In the movie Divergent, Beatrice is different from others and the government is out to kill her because she deemed too powerful. Both of these stories show that over control is a catalyst for irrational revenge through theme, plot, and conflict.

When the King’s council took Hop Frog captive and gave him to the King as a present, they took Hop Frog for something lesser than them. Even though Hop frog was a dwarf, he used his differences to his advantage in performing revenge. He proved to the King and his council that they mistook him for incompetent and Hop Frog made them pay. “ “Poor Fellow” he placed the goblet nervously on the table and looked round upon the company with a half intense stare, they all seemed highly amused at the success of the kings joke.” (Poe) In this quote it is clear that Hop Frog is displeased when the King makes a joke about him. It also shows that Hop Frog was able to hide that anger so the council and King wouldn’t anticipate a revenge act. Connecting with the movie Divergent, Tris is similar to Hop Frog because she is different and unique. But contrasting with “Hop Frog” Tris is wanted by the government because she has all three traits of strength, intelligence, and compassion. Tris is known as divergent. It is shown through the plot that the government must eliminate all divergent in order to maintain full control. In “Hop Frog” there was an apparent conflict between Hop Frog and the King and his council. The story makes you believe that the King had no knowledge that there was even a conflict between Hop Frog and himself. That shows how they inferred that Hop Frog was insignificant based on his size, and immobility. This thought by the King greatens the conflict of not just taking Hop Frog from his home, but failing to recognize him as a person. “Hop Frog had been carried off from his respective homes and sent as presents to the King by some of his ever victorious generals.” (Poe) In this quote it proves that Hop Frog had done nothing wrong to deserve capture. The conflict is brewed in this quote when Hop Frog is taken from his respected home. The movie Divergent has a similar conflict between Tris and the government. The government wants to control everybody and when Tris is recognized as too powerful, she must be killed. The conflict is Tris against the desire for control by the government. “What if they already know? Then you’re already dead.”(Burger) This quote from the movie Divergent shows undeniably the need for control by the government. Basically, if the government knows you’re divergent then they have already plotted to kill you and you have no chance of survival. You can also infer from this text that the government is so fearful of divergent people that they could know if someone is divergent before that
