The main character is going against everything that this society has set up for their people and the society believes in what they are doing is the right way of life. He is pretending to be someone else in order to get the life he wants, since the scientists say that his genetic makeup is not suited for that type of work. In any society when one of their own goes against the cultural norms there is going to be backlash against that person. When any society has certain beliefs, they do not like it when someone acts differently and goes against them. All cultures have certain expectations that they believe everyone should follow, so when someone breaks away from the norm people get defensive and try to stop the person from venturing away from the norm. There are examples of this throughout our country’s history, from not thinking women were capable of anything more than cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children to believing that African Americans weren’t capable of anything because of the color of their skin. Our society has an expectation for everyone to follow depending on your age, race, and class. We follow these rules based on who we are, because if we didn’t we would be looked down on. Some of these expectations cause a lot of pressure on people, for example, those who are famous are expected to be perfect and never make any mistakes. Another example of this is from the film when Jerome kills himself at the end of the movie because he is no longer perfect like he was created to be. Unfortunately, no one knows better because our parents, teachers, and everyone else that watched over us when we were children taught the norms and values to us. Some of these norms and values do get altered over time, because each generation will start to change the values to make them their own, as they get older. If I were the main character I would’ve made similar decisions as him. If I wanted a career or different lifestyle than what I was told I could have, I would do everything in my power to make it happen. I would’ve done exactly what the main character did if I had the dream to go to space but was not given a fair shot because I was not genetically altered like the rest of their
