City of God is a film by Fernaldo Mereilles and Katia Lund. The film is narrated by a young boy named Rocket and focused on the stories of the local gang leaders in Rio de Janeiro. Rocket observes countless acts of violence to and from the people of the City of God. Although the plot is driven by numerous individual acts of violence, the film illustrates a cycle of violence throughout the generations. Violence causes death, which incites revenge. Almost everyone in the favela either succumbs to violence or died at the hand of it. Young Rocket was the only individual in the film that overcame the cycle of violence and sought out his own path.
We are first introduced to the favela and its residents. It was created to displace many poor or unrest citizens of Brazil on the outskirts of Rio, where the only individuals are the police. The film illustrated that with the desire for violence only incites revenge and more violence. This is portrayed when Ned was seeking for revenge and justice against Lil Ze and is in turn killed by a kid who was looking for revenge for Ned killing his father. The only person who escapes the cycle of violence despite numerous temptations is Rocket. Rocket had an optimal opportunity to get revenge on Lil Ze for killing his older brother Goose, however, he chose not to pick up the gun. He also escaped the cycle by refusing to rob the bus. Instead, he found a job delivery paper for the local newspaper. Unlike Rocket, Lil Ze gave into violence. He became the most notorious gang leader. He obtained his power by killing all those in his way. Although Rocket associated with numerous gang members: Benny, Lil Ze and Blackie; he did not turn to violence. He was the only individual to overcome to the cycle of violence and fulfill his dream of becoming a
