12 Years A Slave: Difference Between Book And Movie

“But remember, there are two ways to dehumanize someone: by dismissing them, and by idolizing them.” This quote, attributed to David Wong, sums up the difference between the book Twelve Years a Slave from its film counterpart. Characters and situations that Solomon Northrup wrote down were altered in the making of the film, and by dismissing some people as villains and idolizing others as angels, the filmmakers dehumanize both the slaves and their owners. Changes to the material made by the film creators in an effort to make the film more entertaining changed important aspects of the story, and did not further the truth of the story. The movie 12 Years a Slave frequently adjusts or blatantly ignores details of the book for shock value. There is more violence in the film, and not all of it can be attributed to the difference between reading a line and playing a part. A slave is murdered on the ship by a sailor, when in the book, the slave dies of small pox, a disease that Solomon also contracts. There is more nudity than in the book, especially in the auction scene. Solomon explicitly states that the slaves were given new suits, and the filmmakers decided the slaves should be naked. Later, when Tibeats tries to kill Solomon, it is portrayed much differently. In the novel, Tibeats ties Solomon up in the …show more content…
The slight details rob both the slaves and the slave holders of their humanity and autonomy. Neglecting to mention Solomon’s job as a slave driver and making Ford no better than any other slaveholder allows the filmmakers to paint a picture different from the one that actually existed. Solomon spent twelve years of his life in slavery, and he freely admitted to all of his actions and the actions of those around him. Changing those actions changes the story, changes the script, and masks the truth of Solomon’s

Twelve Years a Slave was not only an abolitionist novel but it exposed the hypocrisy resulting from slavery. He said, “I could not comprehend the justice of that law, or that religion, which upholds or recognizes the principle of slavery;” (Northup 53). From the eyes of a black man the laws, beliefs, and ideology of the United States did not make any sense to…

The movie To Kill a Mockingbird, based on the novel written by Harper Lee showed the life of a child during the Great Depression and captured the theme of innocence taken away by evil. In most cases the book is always better than the film because life lessons are taken away in greater detail and are much easier to apply to a reader's life. Many movies stray from the book as did To Kill a Mockingbird, but also captured the scenes not shown in the book. Unlike the book, the movie had taken away the relationship that Boo Radley had with the children. One part of the book which was not shown in the movie was Mrs. Maudie's house fire when Boo Radley had draped a blanket over Scout’s shoulders while Jem and Scout were standing in the cold.…

This is additionally accurate for those telling a true story. Many vital parts of the story line are left out because the director saw them not important enough to make the cut in the allotted time. “12 years a slave,” was an intense book and while the movie did a decent job following its intensity, it lacked many moments told in his story and like all movies, some of the details were changed…

It is impossible for a white person in the novel to understand the effects of slavery. They cannot feel the pain behind the experience and what it does to a person. For example, it is impossible for some white people to understand why Sethe killed her child. They put her in jail for it, yet perhaps somebody who has experienced slavery could understand her reasoning behind it. This excerpt touches not only on this subject, but also the inability for a white man to admit to his part in slavery in both metaphorical and visual ways.…

On the plantations of the antebellum south, the labor force of enslaved African Americans faced a life of physical violence and mental torture. The slave life of Solomon Northup, as depicted in the film 12 Years a Slave, exposes the variety and intensity of the abuses slaves dealt with at the hands of their masters. Solomon, who was born a free man is illegally sold as a runaway slave; he is stripped of his name, stolen from his family, beaten and whipped then sent to the south for auction. Solomon attempts to deal with the complete loss of his freedom the best he can; by surviving with the hope that one day he can regain it. Solomon faced two types of slavery while he was held, each with a differing toll on him, both bodily and mentally.…

However, as mentioned earlier, it is my argument that each of these films also furthers the intrinsic racism that is still found in many American people today in various ways. 12 Years A Slave provides a very clear example of this issue. For the most part, this was a movie that was widely celebrated for its graphic, moving depiction of Solomon Northrup’s experience as a slave in Antebellum America. The primary focus of the film on the brutal treatment of Northrup came at the hands of two slave masters, Tibeats and Edwin Epps. Both of these men were ruthless slave masters who relied on the whip heavily.…

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a very powerful and important piece of work when it comes to understanding the dehumanization and harsh treatment of the slaves in Pre-Civil War United States. Frederick Douglass uses crucial detail in his narrative to make the reader understand just how badly the slaves were truly treated and how profoundly unequal slaves were from everyone else during this time. Douglass uses many rhetorical strategies throughout his narrative in order to really shape how the readers are going to interpret the narrative, and to allow the reader to develop an understanding of his major theme of dehumanization. He uses detailed descriptions of brutal beatings, repeatedly mentions the contrast between the white citizens and black slave’s treatment, and exposes the…

Slavery was a dark period in history. It was a time that many people feel uncomfortable talking about because it evoke a lot of sadness, coldness, and even a bit of anger. In our class, When Black Lives Matter, we have read many narratives including but not limited to: Narrative of Fredrick Douglass, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, The Confessions of Nat Turner, Steven Hahn: A Nation Under Our Feet, and we have even watched a very popular film, Twelve Years a Slave, an heart-felt drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the main character, Solomon Northup. During the period of slavery, slave revolts were very rare, even under the harsh conditions that they sometimes were exposed to such as beatings, lynchings, rapings, and often times, the…

Slavery is a condition in which one human being is owned by another and is under the owner's control, especially in involuntary servitude. The history of slavery spans from every culture, nationality and religion and from ancient times to the modern times. However, the social, economic, and legal position of slaves was different in different systems of slavery in different times and places. Slavery can be defined as an institution based on a relationship of dominance and submission, whereby one person owns another person, just like a piece of furniture, and exact labor from that person. Since the arrival of the twentieth century, the term slavery has been more broadly understood as something that include forced labor.…
